Hi, sorry for bombarding this forum with questions. What's the deal with equipment in the Army? Do you have boots, uniform, armour and such issued to you, or do you have to go out and buy your own? If it's the latter, can you choose your own boots and other equipment or are you simply told what to buy and from where?
Thanks guys, your help is appreciated so much.
Ben.

I think you get things like boots, uniform issued you. I think you should get a letter like this telling you what you need to take with you

Bit unclear, Are you asking with reference to training or once you have finished phase one & two/CIC? With reguards to phase one all you need is what is on the kit list.
As a recruit, they need you learn how to get by using issue kit only. You will be issued everything you need for your training from boots to long johns and from combat jackets to gloves. If you want to buy extra items to help make life easier during training consider buying three or four bin bags, a decent lighter a small maglite, extra bog roll, plenty of zip lock water proof bags and a sewing kit. On your kit list you will see a list marked "optional items" I suggest you get as many of them as you can. Get the idea of buying a gucci pair of boots pre-CMSR out of your head, as you will not be able to wear them.
Once you are a trained rank you can by all means spend the money and get a good pair of boots, must have good ankle support and be plain black. Lowa and Altberg being very popular. Also things like the Snugpak sleeping bag as packs down under half of the size of the issue bag, decent stove (gas or multi-fuel) etc etc are top things to buy after phase one. But for now stick to the kit list, the issue kit is all you need.
The general rule of thumb is before you buy any extra kit ask yourself "do I really need this and how much space will this take up"
But to answer your question,
