Long Way To Go

Post by Utrinque Paratus »

Alright guys. Started training for the Parachute Regiment about 2 weeks ago and I can already feel and see the difference. I've lost over half a stone and improved my 1.5 mile time from 19 minutes to 16:12. My best circuit training is 51 sit ups, 15 press ups (both inside 2 minutes) and 2 pull ups. I've sent off my application and have my BARB test on the 1st of october. Still a long way to go I know but I'm looking forward to training everyday as it's a day closer to my goal. From my results it sounds like I'm a right pieman I know, it's just that I have a big frame and quite a muscular upper body (not really built for running). Also 40 a day didn't help but have given up completely and lasted 2 months without one.

Well in, just make sure you keep yourself motivated when you start to see a reduction in your improvements. You said yourself you've noticed a big improvement but it won't always be that way once you've been training for a while. Improvements will become more gradual and it's easy to lose heart if you think you're training and not getting any gains from it (even though you are).

Cheers mate. Yeah, sooner or later I'm not going to see as much improvement as I'm seeing now and like you said it's important to keep going when this happens. first time I ran and got 19 minutes I was so disappointed and angry but the next day I got 17:18 and was so happy to see progress in black and white. Seeing the progress really spurs me on

Keep on going mate, my first 1.5 time was just over 15 minutes, and I've been shaving minutes/seconds off each time I run, I'm now around the 11 minute mark.

What I found helps was rarther than doing the 1.5 miles at a slower average pace, cut it down by half (0.75 miles) and run it at a higher intensity, It worked wonders for me because at the beginning I was asking my body of to much going straight into 1.5m.

Good Luck.

Cheers MisterB, good effort. I've been doing the same as you really. I run 0.5 mile at max effort everytime I train. Once I get to 3 minutes I'll aim for 1 mile in 6 minutes etc. Just wondering, how long did it take you to get down to 11 minutes

Try running longer distances (3 miles, 5 miles ect) and then test your 1.5m every, say fortnight. I'm sure you will be suprised. Also running longer distances will help more with your fitness, you will want to go into depot with more than the basic fitness level required.

Hi Utrinque Paratus, keep at it and you'll get there eventually! :)

When I first started I could hardly run for more than 60 seconds at a time without stopping, it took me a while (just over a year) but my 1.5 time is at 10 minutes.

Just keep at it - all the time.

Same goes for the pressups, if you can do 15 maximum then do a set of 7 reps, then a set of 10 reps, then a set of 7 reps again - if its too easy then add a few more on, do that two/three times a week and you'll be getting there, just remember to up the reps as your ability increases :)

again, when i started I could do 20-25 pressups best effort, but at the last insight course about 2 months ago I managed 50.

Running for me has always been the main struggle though :) let us know how you get on!

Thanks for the encouragement. Very well done on your progress and determination. It's good to meet someone who struggled at the start as well, as a lot of people have a good level of fitness when they start. My brother (who is in week 9 of RM training) was getting 12 minutes straight away and when i didn't get anywhere near that i was very down. Now I can see the progress, it's really motivating me. Will keep you updated

Er hem....there are girlies here too...... :o

You're improving every day. Keep that motivation going & you'll achieve everything you want.
Make sure you don't do too much too soon. Swimming will take the strain off your knees & ankles.
Have you thought about doing the Paras 10??
It will give you an achievable goal, & it's a year away, so you've got plenty of time to get to grips with a bergen. :D :D

I'm sorry, of course there are ladies here, quite right. Well hopefully in a year I'll be in basic training, maybe looking to pass out (with a lot of hard work!)
