Introduction and question regarding regiments

Post by soundwave »

Hello, new to the forum and in the process of filling out my application form! Basicly im having second thoughts about choices of regiments. Im planning on putting the Parachute Regiment 1st choice, Cavalry second choice and Engineers 3 choice. However this looks like the point of no return with these choices and I've realised I have a lot more to consider than I thought previously.

My main worry is im hoping to get engaged fairly soon and im kind of doubting the suitability of my choices for somebody who has made that commitment. If any of them are unsuitable why are they unsuitable and what would be better? Thanks for any help!

I think mate his is a question only you can answer. The armed forces isn't just a job its a lifestyle and at times, particularly in the current political climate, all other things must take a back seat to the career you have chosen.

Speaking from experience it is best to go with what you want, not what you think may be best for others. Hypothetical situation for you here. If Paras is what you want but you go REME thinking it best for your relationship, then your relationship unfortunately ends, you are in a job that was your 3rd choice. Or you could go REME and hate it, there is nothing worse than begining to resent a relationship with someone you love because you chose to settle for something else, just incase what you wanted became the death of the relationship.

What is meant to be is meant to be. If you and your partner are meant to be together, you will be together whether you are Paras, Cavalry or REME.

Make this decision for you.

In the end it's up to you what you do in the forces. We can't help or advise you. Use your head and think to yourself "What do I really fancy doing?" From then on go for whatever you fancy.

mate bit of advise from someone thats been there done that, well im not a full soldier (yet...) but i discharged over my dominating (ex)missus, so if she is planning or you are planning on seeing each other too often i dont think its a good move to join the army. its more of a single-mans job this is, but saying that there are plenty of happy families/couples in the army just wether you and her could cope with the initial period of time apart for quite a while.

Soundwave,

it strikes me as there being quite a difference between being an Engineer, and being an Infanteer; that is the first decision you need to make. Then you can think about regiment; for example, if you decide infantry, you've got the Paras (complete with pink hat  ) plus many other regiments, all steeped in their own tradition. And in which case you should immediately cancel your Army application and join the Corps instead. If you decide to go the engineering route, there's not only RE, but REME, plus countless jobs in various other regiments of a related nature depending on what you envision an 'Engineer' to be.
