Anti-inflamitory gel.

Post by Dave_1987 »

What are peoples opinions on these and experiences.? Is it best to use it overnight or after a workout or something like that. I have some RadianB, it's not the best stuff but don't think it really matters does it.

Cheers guys,

Try Tiger Balm. Comes in two colours, white and a sort of shitty brown colour. Use the latter as it's stronger acting, it can be bought in most UK chemists these days.

I also used to use it prior to playing a game of rugby. What you did was palm a nice dollop of the stuff into both palms of your hands. Come the first Scrum (I was a tight head lock) I'd douse the oppostion loose head locks naughty bits with the stuff!!! :D

During one game against this RAF team (think it was RAF Larbruch) whilst playing for the Royal Navy/Royal Marines in Germany I, along with our loose head lock gave both the oppostions Locks the full treatment.

Oh I say Ref! That nasty Marines done summut to me privates so he has!" annouched their loose head lock who it transpired was a former Oxford Blue and was built along the lines of a Brick Shithouse. KIN WIMP that he was!

You could also try IBELEVE Anti-inflamatory cream. The physio's swear by it. I've used it a few times with great success.

Cheers

Tiger Balm is the dog's bollocks.
Be warned about getting anti-inflamatory from your GP though. Sometimes they just perscribe it treat the symptoms and overlook the f*cking cause.

This is going to sound like a dumb question but I've got to ask.

Why would I need anti inflamitory gel? What does it cure, or does the fact I'm not looking for it mean that I generally don't need it.

I smashed me nuts after highsiding at Snetterton once, my one bollock was like a tennis ball only purple and black. The Dr at the medical centre gave me something to rub in them. I can't remeber the name of it but it stopped them swelling, super.

Only time I've ever needed to stop something become inflamed?

It's not a cure, it's just an aid to reduce swelling mate. Swelling is the body's way of protecting itself when injurerd believe it or not. Although it can hurt like hell sometimes. It's kind of the body's way of saying "don't move me or it will hurt" - a survival thing. That's swelling in a nutshell for you.

Well I'm no doctor mate. I just told you what anti was and why swelling occurs. It's up to your brain to sort out the right course of action regarding your problem. Nobody likes swelling. It's uncomfortable and it can takes ages to go away.

Just use your head mate. If you have a problem then please do the right thing and see a doctor or a physio.

yeah I here you. I dont any problems other than the aches from a 10 miler I do on a Weds night.

I go and see the pyshio I used to use when I was racing for a massage when I get the odd knot or strain. Not cheap but it works wonders, and keeps me feeling fresh.

I was just asking if it was normal that im not swelling? Im guessing it is so no stress.

6 weeks to PRMC so im not going to do owt silly now. Cheers for the advice any how.

Here about the guy who got stung on the end of his Owd Man? It swelled up to three times it's normal size. So off he trundled to the Quack and asked the quack "Doctor can you remove the sting but keep the swelling please?"

Inflammation occurs as a result of trauma or overuse and as has been mentioned, the bodies self defence mechanism.

The process involves the COX enzymes which also line the GI tract. Most NSAIDs such as brufen etc are taken orally and thus a side effect of reducing the swelling is also reducing the protection COX enzymes in the gut and can result in ulcers, bleeding etc.

Creams and gels are absorbed throught the skin and can reduce the effects on the GI tract and in theory get to the area of concern faster if you rub over it. But the body doesnt quite work like that, and everything tends to end up everywhere else once absorbed.

However there is now science proving that there are more than one COX enzymes, and the enzyme protecting the gut and the one involved in inflammation are close cousins but different. Pfizer (celebrex) and MSD (vioxx) amongst others have developed NSAIDs that spare cox-1 (gut) and effect cox-2 (inflammation) there is also some evidence to a third enzyme.

There was a cox-1 sparring product called mobic (initially used in dogs) that is tolerated better than traditional NSAIDS but not as effective.

Brufen when prescribed at its commonest prescribed dose is tolerated but not very theraputic, when prescribed at its theraputic dose of say 800mg BD, its side effect profile rockets and your arse starts to bleed :o
