Sprinting / Hill Sprints

Post by benny687 »

Read a few posts on here and seen a couple of the PRMC diaries suggesting doing some sprint training along side normal running.

I have been doing a 3 mile route 5 days a week monday to friday, but over the last couple of weeks I've swapped 2 days to jogging half a mile to the park and sprinting over the football pitch (sprint across and job back 5 times) or sprinting up a hill of about 70 yds or so (again, sprint up and jog down). Then half mile normal run home again.

Is this enough and will it improve my overall fitness?

any replies appreciated.

Hill sprints are amazing for conditioning and leg strength, I do them once a week up a very steep hill, I’ve now work up to.

warm up

sprint up the hill

perform 10 burppy

Jog/walk back down

Repeat ten times (the work out is basically a 100 burppy challenge mixed in with 10 hill sprints)

When I say hard, I mean this is HARD, I regularly throw up on the 5-6 rep and struggle to walk for the rest of the day after wards.

Since starting these roughly a year ago I’ve seen my over all speed and strength go though the roof but also my endurance has benefited from it to as it help with lactic acid removal etc

These certainly aren’t to be over done mind.

Enjoy!

Ben, the best way to know if this is enough is if you are still making progress and gains. If that is the case then crack on. If your progess has come to a standstill try a different programme.

Fair one, did the 3 miler route again today and although I felt tired and the thighs were aching from yesterdays sprints, I did feel like I was covering the ground faster. Stupidly I didnt time it, will start this next week.

Might have to build up to the 10 reps of hill sprints stokey, Im only doing 5-6 at the minute but its a start.

Cheers lads!

Of course mate, I could only make 4 times on my first attempt with no burpee at the top  I just kept at it and it came, I mean I’m by no means anything special, I’m sure there are lads on this site who would make mince meat of me in a gym test... like Spence said as long as you know your self your progressing then all is good

For some people running a mile is a huge mile stone, for others a ultra marathon from Melbourne to Sidney is an achievement, we all have our own personal abilities and goals, as long as we push these then in my opinion you are just as good as that human freak who runs ultra-marathons.

Just keep running
