A little advice.

Post by johnson »

Hi,
Just passed selection and got a date to start training for the royal amoured corps. But, having second thoughts only because when i come out the army i'll have no job, no qualifications and you can't drive tanks on civvi street lol. Just wondering what you ex-squaddies did when you left?

You'll do courses and stuff in the army that will help a little for when you eventually come out. Like NVQ's and possible GCSE's and A Levels's. Also, for example, you might do a signal course in the army and get relevant qualifications that way. I know you're going in for the Armoured Corps but I'm sure there's still tons of specializations etc within the Corps.

Good Luck!

What kind of civvi job could a signal course get me?

Well, my dad did signals from day 1 in the Royal Marines and got up to Yoeman of Siganls. At one point I belive he was one of the most senior signal men in the Corps, certinatly one of the most senior NCO's.

He got various technical qualifcation from it and had the oppurtunity to do a degree (not sure what in, probably telecommunications) but couldn't complete it due to lack of time (he was still serving).

When he left he had jobs in various phone network companies and is now a manager in BT. He's done pretty well out of it in the end!

This is just one example from one soldier, everyones different. Everyone thinks signals are boring but it's unbelievably important and there's loads of oppurtunites.

But remember, there isn't just signals. Have a look on the army website and see if there's any specializations that interest you. Doesn't necessarly have to be technical, maybe something practical.

You may not drive tanks in civvy street but if you join the RAC you'll get all your HGV licences for free and since you will also do the routine maintenance on your vehicles you'll more than likely also get some kind of qualification for that too.

My bro-in-law was in the Tanks and he's done alright for himself since leaving the army.
