Walking/Hiking

Post by SamForrest »

Hi guys.I'm trying to currently get back into my fizz after having some injuries, I'm having to be careful about it, but I'm getting bored with all the gym work. I'm doing my circuits and lots of wierd and wonderfull things outside at the moment to break up the day to day sessions in the gym I also have. But I'm thinking about maybe introducing some nice hill walking to get me out and about.

I can see it possibly helping with strengthening my feet after my shin problems, although it won't exactly be an intense cardio session. I live near the South Downs so have some excellent terrain to trek over.

Just wondering if anyone else does this, I get a kick out of just walking for miles without knowing where I'm heading!

Hillwalking is great training. It gets you out in the fresh air, can give you a great cardio workout (if you keep the pace up), and gives you the opportunity to practice your skills with a map and compass.

All the best.

P. S. There's some great stuff about hillwalking on this site:

Sam, I've just recently moved to Moulsecoomb. Whereabouts in the downs are you matey? I'd recommend BMF for you. It's just been officially recognised by the British Army as the perfect thing before going into basic training.

Yeah, hill walking is great I was going to start and do that but I prefer to run, gets you just as fit but faster :) but since you are just recovering from injuries it's probably a good thing.

Right guys.Im going to look for some boots this week, and hopefully will get out and cover some miles. I know it sounds a bit naff, but has anyone got any tips on the best way to walk. I mean, shall i set out at a good pace (Used to tab with mates when in the cadets) or shall i find a hill and just walk up and down it all day? Im working out twice a day and hoping that some nice walking will be relaxing but also tax the legs to a certain degree!

Any got any tips? I know the local area so a map isnt really needed. Just not too sure how to go about having a good session! Not looking to take much weight at the moment, just me,some boots and some tunes!

The most common and I personally would say best way is to try the "one foot in front of the other" method  :P .

To be honest mate, if your walking for exercise just keep it at a good high pace, don't let your self bimble along. Personally I doubt it makes much difference so long as your sore and tired by the end of the day.

If your walking for the views, weather and good time... go to some other country, :P Only messing, There’s tons of great places for walking, just be sure to have your water proofs at the ready. (even in the middle of summer!) when your up on some fell somewhere it can be baking hot one minuet and the next bloody freezing and wet!

All the best
