Not going to be a Marine for a while now...

Post by ali_hire »

Well after having started the application process well over a year ago I have made the decision to put my goal of becoming a bootneck on hold for the foreseeable future. :(

There are 2 main reasons for this, the main one being that it is not financially viable for me right now. My better half and I are currently looking to sell up where we are now and buy a bigger house up the road, I initially thought that this wouldn't be too much of a problem and that we would still be able to do this once I had 'got in', but having sat down and worked it all out, it will take me roughly 10 years in the mob to get myself back into the financial situation I am in right now; and I don't particularly want to wait that long to move and start a family. :)

Another major reason is that ever since my first PRMC was booked last September I have been plagued by injury, most of it, I am aware, is of my own doing. I injured my lower leg running and had to cancel the one in September. I then recovered and went to Lympstone in November last year, only to re-injure the same part of leg and having to pull out halfway through day 2. I then had 6 months to recuperate and had another booked for the start of June only to find out from the doctor that I had something called mechanical back strain and that if I don't rest it I could do myself serious damage and require surgery. GREAT!

So I have come to the decision that it will be better in the long term if I just take the time out to recover (in the meantime getting myself a new house and getting into a position whereby I can afford to take that big drop in pay and still survive) and try again sometime in the next couple of years. I am also toying with the idea of re-sitting one of my A levels as I am about 10 UCAS points from being eligible for officer entry.

I will still peruse and post on the forums though so you won't be getting rid of me that easily. :P

When fully fit again why don't you give the RMR a go. You will learn all the skills required and put you in good stead if you ever decided to go Regs. Plenty of lads do RMR before going in as officer and regular nod?

Portsmouth det is part of RMR London, maybe worth thinking about.

Good luck with it.

Sorry to hear about that Ali, but glad you've got plans for the future. If you go for the re-take im sure you'll get those extra 10 points, you can get them. Sh!t gets to us all somewhere along the line, its how we deal with it that makes us stronger.

Take care, all the best. 8)

with an injury worry, it sounds like you are doing the sensiible thing mate. No point risking it and making it worse. All the best mate.

Cheers for the comments guys.

To be honest I hadn't given the reserves a thought. It would probably be a very good idea though as it would help me improve my fitness, learn skills that will help once in and show my interest and hopefully set me apart from other officer applicants at the POC and AIB.

However, I really wouldn't be able to run the risk of being called up (I've no idea how likely this would be TBH). My employer wouldn't be able to replace me short term so I'd have to quit my job if I wanted to do this. Kind of catch 22 really.
