PRMC Diary 19-23 march

Post by chak »

Took me long enough to eventually sit down and write it up but here it is!

 :D

Tuesday

Was travelling by myself to lympstone from plymouth, but if you see any young'ish smartly dressed guys hanging around a train station (like in exeter) they are probably heading to same place as you so its a good idea to introduce yourself. i knew noone but by the time i arrived i had met three other people so wasnt quite alone. Arrived at lympstone around 2:10ish and were the first few people to arrive. Its a good idea not to arrive to late since it means you can get picky about what boots you want - you want a good fit for when you are on bottom field

Once you have arrived you basicly sort out the kit you'll be using for the time you're there and sorting out your bedspace. Make sure you grab a bottom bunk if you can because the beds are noisy and wobbly so its easier and quieter for all your toilet trips later :D

Nothin much except for paperwork/formalities happen on the first night but its a good time to get to know as many people as possible. i knew noone in my room and their was a uncomfortably loud silence which i tried to break and got everyone chattin. i find it difficult to get to sleep early but thats the best thing to be doin on the first night to make sure you're 110% ready for the next day.

Wednesday

Up at 6 for 'shit shower & shave'. we all planned to get up earlier to make sure we're ready but DON'T do it, they dont like it. Started in the morning with drill which was a pretty funny experience because you're all marching out of sink and gettin most of it wrong  . after this we got changed for the 3 miler.

When doing the 3 miler be constantly alert and ready to move at the speed of light. Warm up isnt that hard, but does get you out of breath for a second or two, but that doesnt matter because the start fo the 3miler is troop run. Like i said, when the 3 miler begins the first bit (1.5mile) is run in a troop so make sure you stay in rank/order with the people infront of and beside you. Most of the staff will run with you just ignore them because they willrandomly shout at different people - if they do shout at you just take it on the chin and carry on dont argue back or frown at them, just crack on. After reaching the 1.5mile mark you'll all stop and then run the exact root back. However they'll line you all up and tell you when to go. DON'T suddenly sprint off with the masses becuase its on an incline at first and it will seriously sap your energy for the rest of it. For example when we started on the 1.5mile return run i was pretty much last because everyone sprinted off, however i took over most of them about halfway through ending up 17th ( :) ).

After the 3 miler we had presentaions etc. on weapons and things the royals have been involved in which take you up to lunch. I had a light/medium sized lunch before gym test 1.

before you get in the gym you will be told instructions on what to do and what not to do when you get in there, Listen carefully because you'll cause unnecessary hassle/humility if you dont. In the gym the PTI's are loud and intimidating (reemember they cant make you pregnant, they just make loud noises :D ...and look scary  ). Its pretty much straight forward in here, do your bleep tests/press/sits/pulls before going on to swim test thing. remember not to itch or scratch during any of the gym tests else you will be punished. however you will find an undying need to scratch so i turned itinto a game where i would just keep scartchin but try not to get caught (only got caught once! 8) )

(Note: after doing my pullups i told the guy taking the scores i did 5 but a PTI told him only to put 4 down, i dont know whether this was a mini-test to see how'd i'd react because my 5th pullup was perfectly fine but i just stood where i was and said/did nothing to argue. - nothin else you can do anyway because you aint gonna change their minds!

the swimmmin test is straight forward, jump in do a length get out and change. - bring speedos! - they dont take kindly to boardshorts like i wore :D

After today you'll be achy since you've dont a lot of phyz remember to drink lots of water by sipping it not gulping huge loads, have an early night becuase the next day will be even hard still. I also spent a little time stretching before i went to bed (just gently) to try and help the muscles, dunno whether it helped or not tho.

Thursday - The decider!

same routine of 'shit shower shave' except you get in all your camo gear today 8). First of all you'll be taken to do the zip line (which is brilliant fun) Make sure you listen to everything they tell you to do before you go to do it and when you are there because you'll get a mega beasting which is not good before you do determination tests and the assault course.

When doingthe zip line, after you get down to the bottom you'll still be holdin on to your rope sliding bit when the staff will put a ladder beneath you for you to stand on to release your harness. Dont put your legs on the ladder until you are told to else you will get shouted at, even more importantly DONT DROP the karibina (metal loop thing) after taking it off of the rope becuase...

1. it could land on one of the staff's head and you'll receive the worst beasting imaginable
2. it doesnt land on one the staff's hard and you'll still receive the worst beasting imaginable

the only guy on our prmc who dropped it was doing pressups/burpess/situps for about 20 minutes before he stopped :o

After zip line you'll be taken down to the assault course. while here you will 'mark time' whenever you are not sprinting anywhere. When on the assault course you'll be shown all the varying assault course apparatus and how to do it correctly after a warm up. make sure you pay attention because you are constantly being watched and if you do not do something correctly you will be identified quickly. after being shown around the assault course you will be lined up infront of the tank trap to begin. When doing the assault course you will do it in 4's and will be lined up alphabetically. This is a particular bitch if you have a surname like mine (Turner) which means you will go around last and have a short amount of time after finnishing to get ready for the determination test.

When doing my timed assault course run i was in a 3, with one guy who came first in the bleeptest and 3 miler and another guy who was same speed as me in the bleep test. so i was really determined to be the guy who came first. After about 3 and a half minutes i finnished first! :D
So if you are paired with people faster than you dont fret just dig deep and put 110% effort in :D

After you finnish the assault course you are made to walk in a big circle to get your breath back before the determination tests begin, however me and the 2 guys i did the assault course with were the last through so had less time to recover  ah well  :)

When the determination tests begin just make sure in your mind you keep tellin yourself you will not stop and you will pass PRMC becuase you havent got this far to stop! in the determination tests we we told to get in 3 ranks and then told to sprint around various assault course obstacles followed by sets of press ups situps and those burpee things after sprinting you'd always have to line back up in 3 ranks whilse marking time. you'll also be told to sprint up a steep hill around a cone and back repeatedly (followed by more sets of press/sits/burprees). at one time we had to run aroudn the cone and back about 4/5 times without stopping. after sprinting around the assault course and sets of exercises we lined up to do a piggyback/load carry run. match up with a guy that is of similar build because otherwise you'll crush someone too much smaller and not give them a very good chance! i did the carry first so i cud get it over with and then the other guy carried me. he asked my how much i weighed but i told him a lower weight (since i weigh about 13 stone) and didnt want to kill hid morale on the finaly bits  . after this we were taken up to shower and change.

Gym Test 2

Rember if you've gotten this far this is the very last time to prove yourself to the training instructors/staff. when you run in the gym you'll be todl to fall in 3 ranks (As usual) and begin markin time or soemthin. the PTI's will ask for x amount of people to get things and help set stuff up make sure you run out to help, even if a load of other people do it doesnt matter, it shows you're prepared to help. in gym test 2 five work stations will be set up and you'll have to spend x amount of time on each one. put in max effort on each one no matter how tired your arms or legs are because you're being watched and its what you've come to do! :P . after finnishin here you'll be doin sprints in the gym i dont know how long we were doing them for but i was hanging out. just keep puttin in as much effort and you cant look back and think about what you could've done better. after the sprints we were lined up in ranks again and then told to sprint to all four corners - everyone ran to the same corner but i ran to an opposite side of the gym to not get caught behind the masses which ended up being pretty good. we were told to do this several more times because we werent fast enough or whatever, but keep going! over take people if you can, dont just fall in behind someone. Gym test 2 finnnished.

Friday

presentation for people who pass, anyone else who failed who hadnt been told finds out when they dont get their passing prmc certificate.

I havent re-read this yet so dont know how hard i've made the prmc sound but its important to remember that it will be very hard otherwise there's no point in doing it. but i found this site has a tendency to make it sound impossible to pass, you just have to smile and keep goin, dont listen to ur body :)

Summary Points/tips
-get there early to get the better quality/fitting kit

-do what you're told when you're told and dont argue

-dont itch/scratch in the gym

-always be the first to get involved when asked for help

-dont drop the caribina

-when doing the assault course you make up time by running between the obstacles, so run as fast as you possibly can!

-there are 4 showers for around 50 lads so get used to being in close quarters to a lot of naked men  . we got a routine going where people would jump in get wet jump out and soap up while others got wet who could then jump out and soap up allowin u to rinse. just dont drop the soap!

- try not to fall in the water off of the monkey bars else you will be soaked and add weight

- Have FUN! :P :P :P

Sorry i have written so much but once i got typing i wanted to point out things i would've liked to know before i went.

Best of Luck to all else the get to PRMC or pass and start RT :)

Good job mate.

Do you do the rope crossing on prmc now? where you climb up that ladder, crawl across a rope, then climb up some bars onto a plank of wood then walk across?

Thanks for the great diary Chak and well done for passing. In the determination test how many press-ups, sits-ups and burprees are generally in a set? Cheers.

Wahey chak, excellent diary :D

One thing I'd add... EAT. Seriously, I didn't eat enough on the first morning and found the 3 mile run f***in' difficult.

I don't think scran is really mentioned in too many PRMC diaries :-?
