hahah fella you cant say whether they'll be like that or not . Officers and recruits can come from all sorts of different back grounds e.g in my recuit troop we had a succesful lawyer and yet one of the co's of lympstone told us he had a not so great upbringing .

the core treat all officer candidates the same so as long as you have the skills and greades you will be fine that said you will probly have to whear a suite quite a bit more than a non commissioned marine

What bollocks. Out of all the guys I've met at, going to, or trying to get into RMAS, only a very small number have been 'posh'. Hell, the poshest bloke in the various selection groups I've been in was probably me, and I ain't posh.

Like marinewannabe said, you can't tell shit about someone's life by how they sound; if you think you can, you are an idiot. Everyone has to pass the same standards to get in, and everyone has an allergic reaction to bullets, so try judging them on actions not appearances.

It's best not to try and speak like that fellas, because in the end of the day it turns into a kind of sterotype and thats not what this forum is about. Im not going to turn this into a bloody 'witch hunt' but come on lads, just become they might pronounce their words correctly it doesnt make them posh. Everyone has different backghround and to just judge from appearances or from what you have seen can be nothing short of utter ignorance and it says something about you in the process.

Even if someone is 'posh', it makes sod all difference. Some people have a better upbringing than others, and some people speak differently to others. At the end of the day if they can do the job that's all that counts. I've met all sorts of Army officers in my time (although not so many RM ones), ranging from those with thick regional accents to others who were very well spoken. At the end of the day they were all qualified to do what they were doing and I would happily have followed any of them into battle. It was their ability to instil confidence and faith in their men, and to lead them through all situations, from the mundane to the terrifying, that was the important thing, not how they spoke or what their background was.

Edit: Just to clarify, when I said 'thick' regional accents I meant as in 'strong' accent, not as in stupid! Just re-read the post and realised it could be easily misunderstood!

you may not need to be posh to get in, but i'm sure it would help. i hear that there is an awful lot of money down there at sandhurst and i did hear one romour from people in the OTC that some officers yearly mess bill's are more than their annaul salary, but that may be a load of boll@cks.

Its all down to the individual in my opinion. I've been on Army officer fam visits and at first I felt out of place as everyone seemed "posh" to me and I talk like an extra from Shameless.

However,

After getting to know everyone, you get to realise that ok there is a large percentage of lads/lasses who are well educated and well brought up, but also there were people from the same background as me - they just spoke better than me. The vast majority were a good bunch, wanted to be good officers and serve their country, simple as that.

Its all about leading your troops. To do that effectively, they must respect and look up to you. It doesn't matter how you talk, what school you went, or how much dosh you've got in the bank. Its about leading by example. Once you focus on that, nothing else really matters.

Of course, some regiments may still be prone to accepting only the finest sons and daughters in society, but I think thats becoming less and less.

Likewise a sense of humour and the ability to take a joke at his

Unicorn, that's more the guards regiments of the army, so you have to provide proof of a secondary income etc. One of my mates is an army scholar, couldn't join any guards regiments due to a bit of a Yorkshire accent.

I'll tag this bone question on to the end of this thread since it is about RM Officers.

Does anyone know the upper age limit for RM Officer? I've heard 25? Does anyone know if exceptions may be granted to 26? For say, people in the RMR?

Just a thought at the moment, I'm planning to join the RMR, and would like to complete my degree and then enter the industry I have trained for 4 years to do. But, I am seriously considering RM Officer as a career, but I'd be about 24.5-25 by the time I'd be able to commit to that decision.

RM Officers do their training at the same place as RM recruits.

These days they come from all walks of life. Your Troop Pig in Training may wear a set of pips but when he opens his mouth he will be just like you apart from his rank and his qualifications.

So some may have a Plum in their mouth? If they don't earn the respect of their Marines they will be binned regardless of where they went to school or what daddy did.

Just look at Prince Edward back in the eighties. Bigest dipshit going so he was! So it was suggested by the powers that be that he resigned his commision to save his parents face. To this day the winker needs help! Useless dick that he is!
