Streaming process for RM Officers

Post by NateJozef »

Hey Guys. First f all this is my first post on here so 'Hello'!

I am currently in the Army. I am REME Air Tech Corporal and I am also PTI trained. I am going for a commision into the Royal Marines for many reasons which include the face that I really respect the esteem all infantry units worldwide hold the marines and secondly, I have seen some of the officers at the unit I am at now and I know I could do a damn site better job then 90% of them!
My question is this: when you have passed you officer and commando training and get into the 'field' force what is the streaming process for the many specialisations that marines carry out? Do you get to choose or are you streamed according to your abilities or a mixture (having a good old chinwag with you boss about what he thinks and you think)?
This isn't a question which features heavily on my mind, I was just wondering. I have more problems right now just trying to coller my Regiment Careers Management Officer and stop him from 'Losing' my papers again!
Cheers Guys.

Good luck mate. I hope you don't go round Lympstone thinking you're better than everyone else in your team, it won't get you far.

 When it comes to your POC, please say that second reason for joining. Such arrogance.

Dudes, what guys need nowadays is not some puplic schoolboy who is just in the military to get a little tick in the box on his CV so when he enters London social circle he can have a good old chinwag at the golf club about how he did his time (although i am not accusing everyone of this mentality).
There are too many people nowadays out to screw your average joe squaddie/crab/bootnect/matelot for everything they are worth all in the name of the country washing their hands of these guys when they do mess up (and everyone messes up sooner or later, believe me, my rap sheet isn't clean!). What they need is a guy who is going to stand up for his troops. You have to lead by example and i've seen a lot of officers not looking out for the guys, not to mention the larger structure of the MoD bean counters (don't get me started on the MoD, Grrrrrrrr).
So do I reckon I could do a better job? Your damn right I do. I know what it's like to be at the bottom of a shit snowball and it doesn't smell good!

Lads, to be fair to this guy, he hasn't said he thinks he's better than everybody else, he's got some experience and wants to use it to become a good officer. I've often gone into a challenge/job thinking that I could do better than people that are already in it, it's not arrogance, it usually happens when you have a passion for something and want to make it better. I'm a football referee (boo - i know!) and I watch other ref's and cringe thinking that I could do better than they do (not all mind), it's one of the things that keeps me doing it, if I couldn't do better than any of them, what would be the point in trying?
Natejozef - I can't really answer your question, from my own reading it is a decision of choice (depending on availability) if that makes sense? However, I haven't been through the system yet so hopefully someone on here who has can clear that up for us?
Get thinking of some good reasons why you want to become a RM officer though, think leadership, responsibility etc - I'm sure there have been some threads on here regarding reasons people want to join. Im not saying make something up, just look outside the box at the real reasons you want to be a Royal, thats one of the key things they will look for during your application process. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Once you have cracked the officer training at CTCRM you will join a Commando unit as a Troop Commander in a fighting Company. In essence you will still be in training for your first year in a unit. Your Company Commander, the Company Sgt Major (your instructors during officer training will be SNCO's, so the Sgt Major will be in the loop) plus the CO and other senior Officers will keep a close eye on you to ensure your doing your job right.

Once you have hacked two years then you can think in terms of specialising. In truth it's a wee bit like being a Copper, they do two years on probation before being let loose on the general Public as a fully fledged Copper. What is it you want to do in the Corp anyway, Helo Pilot?

Oh and Chaps, wind your necks in ref the abuse. He's already a member of the armed forces whilst most of you are not.

My apologies if I came accross as abusive. It's damn hard becoming a Royal marine commando let alone an RM officer, and it just seemed like you were putting them down a bit.

Appointers

Post by alfred_the_great »

The RN/RM Officers Career Manangement is dealt by a body of men and women known as appointers (much like Mil Sec for you lot). Towards the end of your first job you will sit down with the Appointer and talk about where you see your career going. At this point you can look to specialise; it's a grown-up process and most decisions will be made between the pair of you. Obviously popular spec's, such as ML or Pilot will have a lot more applicants and may be more difficult to get into, where-as some of the more esotoric spec's, Sigs or Heavy Weapons, may be quicker to get into. It's swings and round-abouts and really dependant upon what state the Corps is in on that given day.

Any thing else we can help with?
