Was at my final brief yesterday and whilst waiting to go in a colour sergant came out to a lad wanting to join the army and gave him the following advice:
''Run 3 times a week for 30 minutes at a pace where you can hold a conversation with somebody, and in a couple of weeks you're fitness will go through the roof''
This bad advice? if not then im crackin on with some slow runnning!
It's good advice for someone just starting out and so therefore needs to build up their fitness but if you're not a beginner then it won't be much good really. When you first start out it's best to just build up a basic level of stamina and build your muscles up before you start to really push yourself as this will help avoid injuries.
I assume that's why he told this lad that, and after a few weeks he'll probably tell him to stat to up the pace.
You could always go the pace you run now while still talking to somebody. I wouldn't be surprised if it built up your lungs more, while taking your mind off the subject.
If your not fit at all tis reccomended as your not going to be able to run that fast for any distance.
Thats where the distinction between jogging and running comes in.

Yeah thats not so bad but id stick with not having a chat. When i train at rugby and when at boxing, when we run we're told not to talk to each other unless we are doing a drill (in rugby), simple reason is that you need to be very vocal in a drill because you need to be very vocal on the pitch! Boxing, not so much, thats more about focus so i can see why they tell us to keep our mouths shut.

"First with your head and then with your heart. Don't stop."
I can't talk while i'm running it makes me wander in the direction of the person i'm talking to, which on a treadmill isn't good.
Just as a side note, i was in the careers office the other day having a chat and a lad came in about 12 and announced to the Army careers guy "Oh hello i've been thinking about joining the SAS so i can kill terrorists", I could tell everyone in the office was thinking "What a twat".
Right slow running was sugested because it uses a low heart rate, plus talking oxygenates your lungs as you have to take in deeper breaths. A top World Class Ironman Triathlete ran at a low heartrate for monthes of training and eventually his cardiovascular fitness went through the roof. Because your body builds up the heartrate. He would run at a 9 minute pace at a really low heart rate then after a week at a 8:50 pace and still keep the heartrate low. The idea is to run as fast as you can with a slow heartrate. Has been proven to work but youd need 9 months to properly acheieve this.
The world class triathlete im taling about is a man call Mark Allen, some of you that are into sports seriously will know this man rather well id imagine.
The colour sergent will have suggested this to this lad because he proberly hasnt run properly whist training in his life. Maybe the odd school run, or a quick 2miler on a sunday or what not. Running for 30 minutes 3 times a week is gently breaking his body into running.
You cant run before you can walk, and its the same with training, you cant do a maraphon if you havent trained for one.
Hope this has helped a little on the query, im no expert but i no what i have just typed is fact.
