Hi there, just to say thanks to everyone on the course over the last week! If any of you look on here- i had a brilliant time! Hard work, but great to see what you guys are actually made of. Probably going to finish my course over the next year and aim to join in july.
If anyone is thinking of joining, or just wants to see what it's like- go on an insight course. Awesome!

Can you give us a small write up as to what you did because iv not heard of a 4 day insight course and definatly not heard of it being done in St Athan.

I read with a few smiles about "Insight courses".
My insight to the Para Reg was arrive at Aldershot (never been south of Glasgow before) make way to Maida Barracks, hand in all civvies, 8 weeks later, allowed out of camp in uniform (after being inspected and sent back numerous times). Had lost half the guys by then. Then on for another 8 weeks (I think) and 2 further selections, then jump course and 2 weeks continuation training, then another 22yrs insight
I hope you all enjoy your intro to the Reg. Good luck.

Insight
Day 1: Arrival
First day you will get there and just do icebreakers and meet the rest of the guys on the course then settle down for the night.
Day 2:
Tuesday morning you will be issued coveralls, boots, water canteen and mug. You will then go to the gymnasium where you will undertake a rather gruelling boxing circuit training programme ( take my advice get in the ring first cos them gloves are heavy) after that they will probably get you playing a game of 7 a side football or something similar to warm down. In the afternoon they will take you to the assault course to do command tasks and the assault course ( we had our assault course called off due to extremely wet weather. In the evening you will then do a map reading lesson for you to get to grips with grid references and the Silva compass.
Day 3:
On wednesday you will be split into 2 sections (teams ) go to scoff ( food ) then back to the accomodation block for a Map reading test then leave at about 10am for a day in the sunny hills of ogmore (if your in St athans insight course) navigating using your skills you should have learnt the day before in a Point-to-Point excercise. You will travel with a bergen containing: Sleeping bag, Poncho, mess tins, water bottle/mug, bungees, hexamine cooker complete with hexamine blocks, and a full ration pack. They will teach you how to create a shelter using your poncho and bungee cords. Once this excercise is complete you will meet up with the other section and be taken somewhere to scoff up ( cook food ) then when it is completely dark they will take you to an area where you will spend the night. For us this included a river crossing and a mile TAB ( tactical advance to battle ) then taking it in turns between each two man team in each poncho you will be allocated a time on STAG ( guard duty ) usually half hour at a time so everyone will do 2 stag duties throughout the night with just a cyalume stick ( glow stick )for light. From there on its anyones guess.
Day 4:
You will return to barracks thursday morning after having breakfast in the field where you will sort yourself out clean your kit and get ready to do a BFT which includes 1.5 mile best effort timed run, max push-ups in 2 mins, max sit-ups in 2 mins, max pull-ups not timed and a military swim test which involves treading water for two mins wearing your overalls ( which get quite heavy ) then swimming 2 x 50 m lengths and dragging yourself out of the pool. Thursday evening we then went to JJ's which is the bar on barracks ( quite cheap beer ) .
Day 5:
Friday morning you will do a log race 1.5 miles in ogmore over the sand dunes which starts with a monstrous hill made harder by running on sand. Just keep hold of your rope and push on. Make sure if anyone behind is struggling help them catch up. Remember you are only as fast as your slowest man.
All in all this course is an amazing insight into the parachute regiment the staff are all amazing especially H, gilly, Lee and Alex. They will give you all the help you need as long as you give 100% at everything you do in your short week there. I can honestly say at the end i didnt want to leave even though i thought i was never gonna stop aching.
