Joining the Marines
Joining the Marines
Hi everybody, this is my first post after browsing the site over a few weeks. Anyway i have a desire to join the Marines. I am a Christian, and i wonder if i would fit into the lifestyle of a Royal Marine. I don't drink, which i know is part of the lifestyle, but i'm not boring or nor do i shove my beleifs down peoples throats, because i cant think of anything more annoying. Anyway i am just after some advice from serving or former serving Marines who could help me on this matter. thanks much appreciated
Hi Flo, thanks for your reply. I am glad that being a christian will not effect a future career in the Marines, it was just that i thought i might not fit in, for not going out and having a few drinks with the rest of the guys. Or going on nights out to the clubs ,bars or pubs. Just wonder if it would work out alright. thanks
hi there, im 17 too.
not trying to be rude or anything, but when i met with some PRMC guys the seem(no offence) a bit thug like and pretty well....not to bright.
my teacher from school who was in army told me about how the army recuits are slacking quite badly sinse a few years ago thus some min requirements been lowered. he said maybe go in as POCfor marines maybe, but to be honest i feel that id rather go in as recruit then work way up for going exsperience.
the thing is after meeting some PRMC guys i got put off feeling like i had to be more thugesh, and more drink smoke ect.
i think this is how a resobal people feel the marines is which is sad sinse i know soem former marines and they are great blokes.

Welcome Andy,
I'm christian. I drink, it's just a lifestyle choice. I dont see any reason why you will find it difficult in training or a unit as a non-drinker. If your soldiering skills and general proffessionalism are s*^t hot, then I'd imagine that's what the onus is placed on. Not your capacity for, nor interest in boozin it up.
Best of luck with your application.

I know you are only telling us about one experience from meeting a few of people but please don't try and tarnish all Marines (or any military unit) with the same brush. It's on the same level as saying that all single mums are slags or all black people are criminals.jarhead wrote: not trying to be rude or anything, but when i met with some PRMC guys the seem(no offence) a bit thug like and pretty well....not to bright.
I have 2 currently serving friends who are Marines and are both well spoken, well educated and generally very friendly people.
The second point is that the people you say you met were PRMC candidates. So who is to say that the RM would have accepted them? If they are as thick and as 'thuggish' as you say then I doubt they would be.

I certainly don't think you have anything to worry about being a Christian, if anything it will mean you have someone to talk to when the going gets tough and you feel like quitting.
Aways look on the bright side of life.

I've worked as a project manager for a number of years now and what you SHOULD learn is to judge people by their ability and what they can do as a team. If you constantly judge people by the way they look and where they come from you won't get the best from a team and YOU'LL lose out!!!
I hate david brent type managers....
Cheers
It is difficult not to make judgements of people based on first impressions, I think we are all guilty of having done it, I know I have.
What we need to do, as you say, is to be able to see past that intitial judgement/perception and to value people on the more important things.

... One exception to the rule of course, Southampton fans, well they can't really help being a league below us
