Where do I start and whats the process?

Post by wise fwom your gwabe »

Alright gents, firstly let me start by saying wambambadoodam.

Right that’s out of the system 8)

I been wanting to join the RMR for quite sometime now, I’ve overcome quite a few physical problems mainly leg injuries, to keep training. I’m determined to get in despite my doctors no strenuous physical exercise for the rest of your life crap talk (the way I see it you would be worse off if you didn’t keep active you would deteriorate).

I’m fit, active, maybe a little weak on the pull ups but that will improve.

What I need to know from you seasoned vets is where do I start? I cant seem to find any information on this, it just seems everyone except me is up on the mil abbreviations / processes.

I know it sounds daft but I can’t piece together the recruiting process, yeah I assume I know what PFJT, PRMC, Holding troop is etc, but how does it all fit?

If I called my local RMR Mersey unit tomorrow and the next intake isn’t till September 2007 (I’m pretty sure that’s what a thread said), what happens till then, would I sign up then attend the weekly classes for fitness training up till the next PRMC or do I have to wait till September 2007 time then attend my local unit for the PFJT?

I’m baffled, I don’t want to attend PRMC right now because I know I’d fail on the pull ups etc. But if I could attend next year and have all year training with the RMR detachment then I know id have a better chance.

Thanks for taking the time to read this long ass post, I know bootnecks have better things to do than helping freshers like myself but I would appreciate it.

Many Thanks

Alright mate,

What physical problems have you had in the past exactly ?

Not all RMR units have the same recruiting process and intake dates ect, which is probably why you're having trouble piecing together the recruitment process.
RMR Mersey are on leave while Tuesday 5th September, selection is from the 8 to the 10 th of September, after this holding troop will stop until April / May next year.
Providing your past problems aren't going to be an issue and your overall fitness is reasonable, I'd have a crack at selection this time, don't worry too much about pull ups, you can easily improve on these - obviously you won't be able to improve too much prior to selection but if you've got the right attitude and every other aspect of your fitness is good it's unlikey you will fail because your not brilliant at pull ups.
Anyway - you've nothing to loose by attempting selection this time.

Spooky, thanks for the easy as pie answer mate, why didn't I think of that before?

Rich thanks for the reply pal, much appreciated.

When you said;

"What physical problems have you had in the past exactly ?"

Well I fractured my ankle pretty bad ages ago, its been pretty weak since then, i can still feel slight pain when I move my foot to my left, I dont know if thats normal but it isnt causing me too much of a problem now.

I also have severe knee/ankle pain when running, my doc said it was because of my bone posture in my feet and there was nothing they can do blah de blah and I shouldn't be doing any physicaly demmanding exercise on my feet, I told him about me training for the RMR and he said I should stop, Im not cut out for it. :o

Swimming is ok for me though?

Don't get me wrong, I respect the docs opinion, I respect all docs but I just dont agree with it and dont want it to hold me back from getting my goal of being the best.

I know I have nothing to loose by trying out for selection this year but I still feel like I will fail, I know I have nothing to loose and all but I dont want to feel hopeless from day 1, I want to have a crack knowing im giving it my best.

So when holding troop starts next April/May time, will I be allowed to come down and join in as a civvy or whats the deal? Can I join in only after I pass the PJFT? then do holding troop till the PRMC?

Thanks a lot

As said before, the best answers will come from calling the unit but just to give you an idea.

PJFT and PRMC are what you go to if you are going regular.

In the RMR it's just a selection weekend followed by an induction weekend probably on consecutive weekends. Then you're in (assuming you pass of course) and you'll be on your first recruit weekend within a month or so.
Holding troop is a more informal thing, it's run for a few months before selection. You turn up as a civilian, get a feel for the unit, do a bit of phys to help you get up to the standard needed for selection, and get some advice from the guys there.

I know you want to be fully prepared before you try selection. But I'd say you should turn up to your nearest unit at the first opportunity and they'll tell you if you're ready. It takes long enough to get your lid as a reservist anyway, don't delay and make it take even longer.

Thanks SeaJay you've put that issue to rest, I will take that onboard and give them a call tomorrow.

Thanks again all and I hope one day I will be able to advise similar people such as myself on any problems they may have in being the best!

Have you considered seeing a specialist ?

I think all new recruits have to do the PJFT now, or at least thats the case at london. You don't have to pass anything to join holding troop.

I guess at different units they may do it on the evening before the selection weekend or do it on the medical weekend, although again we have all had medicals done at the AFCO.

Like the other guys have said, see a specialist and get yourself down to your local RMR unit ASAP, you have nothing to lose.
Applied: 11th November 05
Written test: Passed
Interview: Passed
Medical: Passed
PJFT: Passed 9.47
PRMC: october
