Joining RMR - Drill night - do you always have to go?

Post by lewis »

OK. I have decided that I am going to join the RMR, but have a little question about the time comittments. As I understand it most units do a training night once a week and have a weekend once a month/every two weeks. Plus an annual camp. But do you have to go to /every/ drill night? I can definately cope with the weekends, but having to go every week is a little restrictive eg I could never go on holiday with my girlfriend.

The reason I'm asking here is that I reckoned if I phoned up my local unit and asked it would sound like I wasn't comitted, which isn't the case at all. I would be able to go to 99% of the sessions but just wondered what the score was with missing a few.

Thanks. Better get on with the training :)

Alright Lewis,

Missing the occassional drill night shouldn't be a problem.

As a recruit you would be expected to attend every weekend training serial, which take place every other weekend - missing more than 1 can result in being back trooped.
Also you would have to attend Lympstone for two weeks at the end of Phase 1, and again for the Commando Course.

Which detachment are you considering joining - Birmingham ?

Rich.

It's ok, you can go on holiday with your girlfriend.

So long as you've got good reasons (ie not just "I didn't feel like phys so I decided to stay at home") no-one will mind at all.
Make sure you let the training team know you won't be there though. Otherwise they may have prepared a lecture and find they have no-one to give it to, which they won't be happy about.

Cheers for the replies guys, thats kind of the way I thought it might work, but wasn't sure.

I'm going to join RMR Birmingham, but need to build up my fitness again after a foot operation, so I reckon it'll be after Christmas before I'm ready.
