Aright fellas
Probably seen me post a few times here about random bollox.
Left my job full time and just do part time or no time, it's good coz I can pick and choose when I work now, i idd work 7 days a week which left no time for training.
Anyways, I know theres alot about running,training and every other topic but I swear i'm abnormal or something.
Running has never been my strong point but i'm sure i'm going in a downward spiral. I have never really been a runner, did althletics in school but I was a javlin thrower and 100 meter spritn and the relay.
Today I just did 2 miles warm up on my bike then stretched a bit when I got back, did tuck jumps for 1 minute, a few press ups, bit more strectching then out the door, quarter mile later i'm out of breathe and my footwork is getting messy.
Am I retard? I'm just going to start again from scratch with this running, should I just run as far as I can at a light running pace and then turn aound when I get as far ass possible with out stopping?? Then the same pace all the way home and just try improve the next day and so on and so on. ? Building it up to 3 miles.
Sorry I know it annoying posting about the same thing and I have read alot about running, just wana know what you lot think.
I'm in no rush, now my job is just training, so I have plenty of time to work on it, I don't have a date for my PRMC, i'm not stupid, i'm not going ther eunprepared, everything else is going fine, just this long distance runnig, (it is for me). Sprinting is fine, my body feels fine, it doens't ache or feel tired, it's my breathing that messes me up.

what you have to do mate is get a distance in mind (say 3 miles), start running your three miles in your best time, it doesnt matter if you have to slow your run down to a jog or even a fast walk, just make sure you complete the 3 miles without stopping, once you can do the distance you then start to time your runs and always aim to beat your last attempt

when i first started running distances, i was heaving after 10 minutes of straight jogging, a few weeks later, my lungs had become larger, and im now quite happy to run for a few hours without stopping, simply put - give your lungs and leg muscles time to develop, make sure you push yourself, so your body knows it has to adapt to the stress
you'll notice a difference in a couple of weeks.

Mate dont worry, as everyone else is saying the old line of "practice makes perfect" really does come into its own. Theres no quick fix, no magic potion, no secret. Just mile after damn mile. Thats why its so rewarding when you find your getting better.
All i can say is always put in 100% - you (the general you, not a personal attack) know when your begining to fade and thats when you jus gotta keep going, staying in your comfort zone will do no good whatsoever. The huys have put forward some good advice on breathing (swimming training etc) also make sure that you control your breathing (the fast and thick hyperventilating sort is bad, it may hurt but you gotta slow it down)
If i were you i would sack the two mile cycle ride along with your circuit work until after the run. Make sure you still stretch though.

I have been using the bike because I thought I was developing mild shin splints (really mild) but I read that if you feel anything then you should stop running asap.
I'm going to the doctors soon to tell them about it, maybe they'll refer me to a sports physcio or somewhere that I can get some insoles for over pronation.
Anyways how do you lot do your warm ups? Should I just do a light jog until I feel quite warmed up and then stop and stretch and count my miles from there? I was using my bike for the warm up but it would be quite good to go for a ride after the run to sort out my stiff/aching legs.

-- warm ups, i stretch my legs and then do a uphill jog for 5 minutes, followed by a downhill jog for 5 minutes, usually gets my heart rate up. follow that with a short break, then into the run.
-- for running, try going as far as you can, at a steady (comfortable) pace, even when your lungs are giving you hell, your legs are starting to buckle, and your stomach is in notts, keep pushing until you cant go any further, then mark that distance.
time your runs, timing how long it takes to get there and how long it takes before your lungs start giving you the breathless feeling. each time you do your runs, tally the times up. you'll notice that your lungs will adapt quite quickly (took me roughly a month to go from 10 minutes to well over a couple of hours).
-- breathing, you will adapt a good breathing pattern with time, i tend not to pay attention to my breathing unless i start getting stitch (because if you worry about it, it starts going all over the place) just relax and listen to music or think of something to take your mind off it.
the most important thing to remember when your legs feel like jelly and your breathing is all up the trot, dont give in, its only pain, it doesnt last. failing feels worse than a bit of stitch.

I just had a go today at walking and jogging just 1 mile, jsut started off with a fast walk, as fast as I could then jogged, then walked etc etc. I could of pushed myself alot further but jsut took it easy today because i've found it de-motivates me when I try too hard and end up doing a shit job at it.
So i'm just taking it easy, managed to do a mile in just under 15 mintues with fast walking and jogging so i will just try and improve on that, I was only pushing l ike 70% and didn't feel too bad atall when i got back.
Cheers for the advice though i'll give it a crack. Everything else is goin fine though, like my pushups,pull ups, sit ups and all that, just my runnig is pants but got plenty of time yet.

your absolutly fine, i only started running properly about amonth ago and i struglled on one mile, now im up to four miles a day. The trick is to just to run at least 5 times a week. If you are struggleing make sure that your not overdoing it, your body isnt used to runningand doesnt need a thrashing, just get your body used to breathing whist running and get your footwork sorted out.
Start running two miles day at any pace you like, just make sure its outside and not on a treadmill (personal experiacne trust me the road is better). Just 2 mikles everyday for 5 days over 2 weeks. By the end of them two weeks i am almost certain you will see a huge change, even if its in one week.
All you want to do to begin with is get used to running, otherwise you could take on an injury (another personal experiance) believe me when i tell you im a rubbish runner in comparison but i am slowly starting to see results

Nice one for the tips mate, i'll give it a go and see what happens.
My shins feel a bit weird so i'm just taking it really easy at the moment, even jsut fast walking. It's better than nothing though.
