Alright people i went to the AFCO yesterday to do my oath and pick up my travel documents and joining instructions.

A good paperback book, a cheap walkman with some tunes, a cheap camera, notebook and a selection of pens, a small first aid kit mainly containing plasters tape etc, cash.
ciggarettes, even if you dont smoke you can sell them to the smokers and earn some cash and mates along the way, Embassy No1's as anyone will smoke them.
I was also advised to take an Ironing board when I go on Marine recuit training (Sorry, I know this is an army section). I guess it'll be the same though.....1 ironing board between 10 of ya!
A decent lighter and some matches are probably the most enduringly useful things you can possess, as is a decent Swiss knife as a backup for when other domestic posessions are lost / stolen / flushed etc.

Knives will get taken from you, and swiss army are crap. Once your allowed freedom of choice and with a unit go for a Gerber or a leatherman, Gerber being my favourite. I used to wear mine on my belt with an old SLR lanyard going from the tool to a belt loop on my denims. So I never lost it if I dropped it.
Don't forget your racing spoon, or just nick one from the cookhouse. Porn is very important and flip flops (you don't want any land oysters between your toes do you, plus they're good for airing blisters).

Fair point though, flip flops are a must.
Porn is also suitable for wrist development to aid the pressups everyone is panicking about, no wonder I can bang out 1000 then (did I just say that?? )
