Commando or Officer Commando
Commando or Officer Commando
I was wondering what would be the best choice for me. Careers tells me to go officer, but I want to get some experience first and be respected by my troop because I heard, the army frowns on officers without experience ie your troop dislike you until you show what your made of. Is this the attitude in the marines?? I have A-levels and good GCSEs, was wondering what should I go for best?? PS Can one apply for a commission after a few years in the corps as a Commando???

Whichever level you start at your still a baby out of training.
If you have the grades and the character go officer, but accept that when you join a troop you are the new guy but with responsibilities and that to become good you will need to take the advice and lead of those junior to you who know the score.
All officers start the same way and going in as an other rank first in my opinion is a waste if your heading for a commission.
Most corps commission officers dont get above captain and end up as the pay officer or something (there are exceptations obviously)

If these things worry you, are you sure you're looking in the right direction!
I'm sure they don't worry you as much as you think they do! So bite the bullet and go for your dreams!
The problem with dreams is the more you think about them the further away the become!

Never quite understood this reasoning.Felias wrote:Careers tells me to go officer, but I want to get some experience first and be respected by my troop because I heard, the army frowns on officers without experience ie your troop dislike you until you show what your made of.
First, bugger what Careers tells you. No more reason for you to go for a commission because they say so based on UCAS points, than for Little Lord Fauntleroy to go for a commission because Daddy Was A Ossifer. Being an officer isn't about a higher pay grade than a regular, it's about leading men. You have to both want it, believe you can do it, and most of all be prepared for the dire responsibilities you might be called on to perform. Otherwise at best you will likely be ineffectual, and at worst a liability to your men.
Second, anyone with even the slightest experience leading anything will tell you that you WILL be disliked at times. Your job is to make the right decision, not the popular one, and to enforce it. If you cannot handle this, it isn't for you. Furthermore, you say that you want experience to be respected by your troop - if you don't have confidence that you can earn their respect as a leader, not from having been a regular, why are you considering a commission?
I just got some bumph through the post from officer recruitment, and was amazed at how the whole thing sounds like an ad for Andersen Consulting, talking about pay grades, job prospects, adventure training and management, convieniently leaving out words like "war" and "combat". Don't be fooled, you aren't applying to 'manage a networked organisation of co-contributers'. You are applying to lead and protect lives under the most extreme and dangerous conditions. You had better be sure you are up to it, or you will be just another ossifer joke...
Alternatively you could ignore all this, as it is merely my opinion based on experience leading in non-military fields, and I am at the same point of recruitment to the Forces as you are
I have a follow up question to this. If I apply for PMRC, will I be told I'm over qualified (I'm currently in the last year of a virology PhD)? The qualifications wouldn't mean anything in terms of my ability to be a better (or worse) marine, but I'm worried that I won't be able to apply as anything other than POC, which is slightly harder (or at least looks it), and more importantly has fewer places available.
But there is one officer intake per year. I am sure I would make it but I got money trouble and me and mum are living off of 80 quid a week. I got no joib experience just been training me ass off, for the Commando Brigade. Fitness wise, I reakon I will be alright. BTW as a beasting how many burpees do you need to do???? I mean as in you get for speaking when not spoken to???

I doubt that... just a hunch though!!Felias wrote:Careers tells me to go officer...
Postulating that: You lost the will to live. You always find what you have lost in the last place you would look for it. The last place you would look for the will to live would be in -Doc wrote:((shakes headwas going to comment but lost the will to live.....))
- the above sentence. Ergo you should have found it as soon as you lost it!BTW as a beasting how many burpees do you need to do???? I mean as in you get for speaking when not spoken to???
