Training in gym
Right thinking of joining a gym for my training for POC, what would you guys reccomend for a schedule of what to do and when? I've got about 4 months till i get my AS results so I'm eligible

If i was you I wouldn't bother joining the gym. 1 Its a waste of money and 2 everythink you are going to be tested on you can do at home, ie press-ups.
Going the gym to do weights or on the running machines does not compere to doing press-ups or road running. As it says above just go through the forum and have a look at other people training programs, or if you want I'll PM you my training program to give you ideas.

when i was on my prmc i was told to avoid using weights as there not looking for arnie look a likes as u will find it difficult to complete the course, instead just keep bangin out press ups sit ups pull ups and running / cycling / swimming thats all you need to do. apparantly, the only people in lympstone who use the weights who are in the 32 weeks are those in hunter company to keep upper body strength decent

Yes, Press-Ups are brilliant and you will be tested on them. Yes, treadmills are pretty much a waste of time. But to be honest, nothing beats using free weights to build explosive power. Also, rowing machines and cross-trainers are superb for building muscle endurance and stamina. As a plus, you also get to see lots of toned birds jiggling around in skin-tight clothing - certainly helps me 'firm up' a bit!
Don't get me wrong, the gym isn't the be all and end all - I rarely use it myself, but unless you have access to a rowing machine, cross trainer and free-weights then a cheap gym membership is well worth the money.
If it doesn't hurt it's not worth doing!
When i'm in the gym i always use the treadmill right at the start for ten minutes to get my heart beat up and a bit of a sweat on as my warm up.
As per AC and beardos posts, yeh rowers are good for your cardio and muscle.
Beardo you have been to my gym, remember the rowers on the top floor? get a great view of the birds "jogging" on the treadmills on the second floor or doing cycling at the spin zone whilst your rowing .

If you want to get good at press-ups, then you do press-ups, if you want to get good at running then you do runinng. Practice makes perfect
As for free weights, the only thing they are good for in my opinion is for squats and to brake up your training program. They are nowhere as hard or intence as press-ups. But you are right about the birds

Doing free weights is worth it if you are struggling with a certain exercise. I myself prefer heavy weights and low reps i.e. 84kg benched 3 - 4 times in sets of 3 etc, as AC said free weights build explosive power which can help when having to bang out 20 odd press-ups as fast as possible.
i know they say you don’t need to do weights to pass PRMC which is probably true, but something that can only improve your strength isn’t a bad thing is it?

Lew, mate your point is what? that free weights will help you. You talk about explosive power, being able to bang out 20 press-ups. Then what? your f@#k thats what? As I'v said before if you want to be good at press-ups you do press-ups, simple as that. Next time instead of editing maybe you should read.

Press-Ups can only help you with this so much, variety is the spice of life. But, by all means - you carry on doing all your press-ups mate, you obviously know what you're doing so why listen to anyone elses advice?

Yes, that’s my point entirely, as AC said, variety is the spice of life, doing a few heavy weights session will increase your muscle strength and help with your press ups pull ups etc, I didn’t say they should replace them, just compliment them. It’s all about getting the most out of yourself and you don’t do that by simply repeating the same exercise time and time again, as your body will become accustomed to it, you will hit a wall and then be on here asking why you haven’t improved.wato212 wrote:Lew, mate your point is what? that free weights will help you.
No your missing the point again, if you do a heavy weights session you will be increasing muscular strength and endurance making 20 press-ups when your hanging out seem that little bit easier.You talk about explosive power, being able to bang out 20 press-ups. Then what? your f@#k thats what?.

For start who said that I just do press-ups? I dont, I like to do a bit of everything. As for free weights, I also do them every now and then, do they make any changes? no not really. Maybe it is just me, if so then fine. What AC and lew need to realize that all this is based on opinion, so if I don't agree with it, it is just my opinion okay.
As for explosive power, I don't use bench press, the best way I found is to fill a rucksack up with weights and start banging out press-ups. This will improve your explosive power.
