Living off base?

How easy is it for someone who has just joined the army to live off base? I know the pay makes it hard, but other than they pay, how hard/easy is it?

A lot of this depends just what unit you are with, when I was with the Para's we where on a permanent 24 hour call out. So they would not be wanting to be chasing around the streets looking for you. Also you will find your self making friends with the other men and knocking around together. To go off and live on your own would to some extent cut you off from them and make you seem shall we say slightly odd.
