Ok,so I went a fairly reputable sports clinic here in Toronto,had a doctor look at my feet while walking and running and decided I need to have custom orthotics made.Each foot turns and screws in a different,but non the less fubar manner.Had the cast made,I should have them in about 2 weeks.
Have any of you fellow wannabes,past or current serving members used orthotics to cure shin splints? Doc said the stress fractures were likely caused from over training on hard surfaces,I could vouch for that,I was pushing too hard too soon,and have since healed.
The muscle pains presist however,the orthotics should correct the way my feet strike the ground,hence curing these 'shin splints'. Have any of you had to get these made,and did they do the trick? I never really had this problem when I was a kid,but of course I wasnt into running.
If these $450 insoles dont fix me,I could be in some serious trouble.
Any advice?
Edit:While on PRMC,are you made to run in boots or runners? Once in the RM,do they have standard boots that you must wear,or are you free to find a pair that best suits your feet?

Not one to normally tear into others posts but I think its misleading to say you don't run in boots on the prmc.... fair one you may not be running a marathon in them but there's a good bit to be done on bottom field and the assault course. Of course you could walk around the assault course don't think corporal will mind!the_trainee wrote:i kno for a fact u dont run in boots on prmc

I had a pair of orthotics fitted after frequent trouble with shinsplints and a few knee problems. Glad to say they have sorted it all out and I haven't suffered from any problems since getting them. One thing I would recommend though is concentrating on flexibility a bit more, as the podiatrist I went to told me that a lack of lower limb flexibility can cause just as much damage as pronation or supination when running. As long as you give yourself enough time to get used to wearing them, you can say goodbye to shin splints mate

I'm currently in training at CTC and had shin splints in the early stages of training. They started at week 9 and did nothing but get worse for quite a while. I asked a few lads in Hunter who had the same problem what i could do about it. They all suggested 'Sorbothane Insoles' as they reduce the shock impact of your feet when they strike the ground. After a few weeks of wearing these my shin splints went and haven't really come back ( touches wood).
Then in week 18 i stepped on something and ever so slighgtly managed to push a metartasal (sorry bout the spelling) out of alignment. I thought that was it. Hunter for me. Luckily enough i had 2 weeks xmas leave straight after. so i had it looked at and Orthotics were suggested. It took a little while for my feet to get used to them, but they did the trick and although it took a few more weeks for the b'stard pain to go i cracked on and eventually the bones in my foot realigned themselves (thank God).
Orthotics are damn good inventions. Wear them in your boots from day 1. The boots they give you are crap. It's just pure luck whether you get through training without an injury because of them. These LOAWs everyones talking about are good but apparently once wet take a long time to dry out. but my advice to anyone in training is if you can get them, get them. Anything that can make training that bit more comfortable-if that's possible-can't be a bad thing.
