Question about moving to England...

Post by William »

Im coming over from Canada to join the Paras in July,my concern is more about being in England than it is about joining.

Im curious if wether or not I will be able to get a drivers licence?
When I leave I will only have a learners permit, you call em provisionals, for both car and motorcycle.

Has anyone who has gone to the UK for a military career had trouble getting a drivers licence? Does the army assist in any way?

My memory is a little shaky regarding Drivers licenses.
I think with a provisional you have to be accompanied by a full license holder whilst on four wheels and your restricted too a 125cc or moped if your two wheeling. The law may have changed again since my time though,so thats not gospel.

Check with one of the Automobile Associations, if you have a licence then you can get a visitors one, but phone up one of your main Car association and they can put you fully in picture of what you can and can't do and for how long.

William, I looked into this, and it is possible to get a UK license right away. However, public transport is quite good over here and you probably won't need a car, especially if you live in London. Plus, the price of gas here is crazy. Cheers, Kyle.

Oh REALLY!
I had a UK License once and when I visited Blighty a couple of years ago I figured I could get my old one re-issued.
Fat chance,I had to apply to somewhere Welsh who told me to retake my test as I drive on the other side of the road.Six months waiting list to take the test.
The rental company were very nice and gave me a shiny new little go-kart just on seeing my US license and a return ticket.

Check out leaflet INF38. I was told that I can drive here with my Canadian license for up to a year. Who knows though.

Fow,
I don't think a learners permit is a license to drive in the UK.
Someone is going to correct me on this subject.
Stix or Goldie may be the people to ask,Or Black Rat.
I wonder how the old 200cc,water cooled Velocettes with full fairings are doing in this modem world,I once knew a bloke who serviced and repaired the awful little things for the Met in London.
Then came "Panda Cars"Morris Somethings that could not chase a rat up a drain with any kind of reliaBILLity 8)

Your Canadian licence will be good for a year as long as it hasn't expired in Canada. Just make sure you leave the UK at least once every 365 days and then it starts all over again. Insurance wasn't a problem for me either.

May I suggest you call the AA and go out with a driving instructor a couple of times, as I did, just to learn the rules of the road, it's a different world and driving on the left is the easy part. Road regulations in Canada are a joke compared to the UK and most people adhere to the Highway Code seriously. Buy the Highway Code book through amazon.uk and go through it before you get there.

Something else, do you drive standard? If not, go out now with an instructor in Canada because I guarantee most of the reliable used cars you'll buy over there are manual. It took me awhile to become proficient at manual but I did it.

The problems begin when a Canadian wants to get a UK licence, you will need to get a manual endorsement, ie. a letter from a driving instruction company saying that you trained on a manual car, if not, you're going to have do do a road test in the UK when your Cdn license expires.

You'll find the drivers in the UK are much better than Canadians and get into far fewer accidents, I'm convinced its because most cars are standard and drivers concentrate better.

Good luck. Where in Toronto are you?

Not sure that Alcohol Anonymous will be able to help with a Brit Drivers License. 8) The twelve Steps lean more towards sobriety than driving skills.
I think the Brits consider"Learners Permits"as less than a Provisional.
You will also have Insurance probs. You will not be able to insure a vehicle unless you have a full license. With no UK driving record that will be a prob.
Best,Wholley.

I may be prone to making sweeping generalisations, but not about day to day life in the UK. I was insured from 2001-2003 with Eagle Star on a Canadian licence which never exceeded 73.00 GBP a month.

Yeah, phoning the AA wasn't easy, first thing I had to do was introduce myself and tell them I had a driving problem.

Instead of using the AA he might be able to use a local driving instructor, they are normaly cheaper than the AA.
