Pressups....

Post by Vladek »

Hello everyone,

Just a question about pressups, I can currently do 10 good quality pressups, or 15 sloppy ones :) , just wondering what it takes to end up being able to do 50 pressups in 2 minutes? If i carry on doing 2 sets of 10 pressups every night will i get there eventually or is there something else i can do (With out going to the gym, man i hate them!!) to improve?

Cheers.

2 Mins is longer than you think so when doing max pressups in 2 mins dont go full out and do them non stop,,, Have a breather half way through then carry on.

Can you do them say do 15, rest for a few seconds 15, rest for a few seconds, the 20?

And a pressup is it until your chest hits the ground to arms stretched out, or till your chest would hit someones fist if it was on the ground? (Just to make sure)

Yes, as long as you dont run out of the 2 min time limit, And i believe in RSC you cannot take your hands off the floor.

When i did them it was from when you touch the persons fist to arms extended.

We only had to do ten whilst we were there, and that was right after the 1.5 mile run for "talking"

They have binned pressups as a fitness test even though they are essential to do since its the punishment of choice.

Yup when you watch the video at the AFCO you see loads of stuff that dosent happen at RSC, and stuff you dont see that does happen there.

They have got rid of the beep test, pressups, situps and the ammo box hold.

But you now have to walk 150 meters with two 20 Kilo Jerry cans. Lovely.

Press-ups
As mentioned before, pressups are an essential part to everyday life in the army, whether it be as a physical punishment, or as part of a physical training session.

As someone said before, you do not have to do the tests with pressups, otherwise known as the BPFA (Basic Personal Fitness Assessment), however, I can tell you that you may be sometimes required to do one of these for a general fitness test. Although in the army they say you dont have to do it as a pass/fail test for the army, theres nothing stopping any PTI testing your fitness with them.

How to increase the amount you do!
A good way to increase your pressup quantity, which I myself have used and been sucessfull with is as follows:

Whether it be once a day or three times or more a day, bang out as many pressups as you can. Do not go for how many you can do in two minutes. Most days I would do 1 set of my maximum in the morning and 1 set in the evening, each time recording my amount down. I started off doing about 20 at most, then improving it too about 60, and at present I can do alot more. Keep a record of how many you do. Trust me it is in deed a motivator to see how the amount is building up.

The way I increased was by doing my maximum each time, but aiming to increase by between 3-5 pressups per week by the following monday.

Rough Guide
Increase of 1: Not too bad, however more effort and will power is needed.
Increase of 2: Your gradually making a difference, bit more effort needed.
Increase of 3-4: Your working at your expected level, and doing well.
Increase of 5+: You are increasing by a good level, and should maintain the increase.

Final Note
If you so choose, you can then test yourself on the weekend with how many pressups in two minutes you can do. In my own personal view, doing them every half hour or hour on the hour, isnt very realistic. I am not saying it is a bad idea, however, think realistic, as I tried the every hour thing and it dont always work out that way. Whatever type of fitness training you do, make sure its realistic enough to stick too. Maximum in the morning and in the evening, and you'll be on your way.

Hope this advice can be of use to some people.

If you are really struggling on the day of the test, try this

10 then rest
9 then rest
8 then rest
7 then rest
6 then rest
5 then rest

and Voila, 45!
