In basic do you wear your own glasses or army issue

Post by Gazza85 »

I got one mate who has done basic training and he says he wore his own glasses for training, and i know someone else who says the army send you to a optician to get a up to date lense presciption and they issue you with and i quote "spunk deflectors"

Anyone else know bout this issue?

I don't know but I would think that they would want the plastic lense rather than the glass ones.

I find it difficult to understand why the forces give you such nasty monstrosaties! (sp?) the idea of camoflauge is totally shot! with a spec of moonlight they would light up like cats eyes even with shamag over them. i think the MoD should reserch into some new non shine material to cover them or something....having said that i havent heard of anyone being shot because of issued gleggs.

Gunn, when the army can get men with perfect vision then why should they worry about men with poor vision. Then there would be a question of when a persons vision is to bad to be in the army. Then a person who is border line to that cut off point would want an excption made so that he could play at being a soldier, till he lost or broke his glasses.

Plus i dont think people who wear glasses are allowed in the infantry. The cut of point for vision is 3/60 in a eye unaided or prescriptions which are more than -7 or +7 (milk bottles)

I was told by the AFCO that the army now allow laser eye surger aslong as its LASIK, but she said that even though they allow it, it is frowned at and it can effect what job choices you can have.

I will find out what they are like in April next year.

The latest ive heard from the infantry is that lazer eye surgery is not aloud.

As for glasses, I am training with the infantry, and I know several people who wear glasses. Alot of them wear there own glasses, however if they brake, or you dont have any, the army will usually test your eyes, and get you the latest prescription glasses

Pheonix 19, okay you get issued with glasses, but have you tried wearing them while on guard duty in really cold conditions, when they start to freeze over, or getting them all steamed up in the jungle over covered in rain, then how do you see to operate your equipment.

I see where you are going, and totally agree. I am not entirly sure on this, but in the military, do they allow contact lenses? If they do, this would obviously be for more sensible option. However, you come down to the same problem in the end - what if you lost one of them? How would you change the lense when required, and so on.

Quite a debatable topic if you ask me, and even I must agree, purhaps the infantry of all places in the army is one place you will not want people with the need for glasses. However, as I read someone post before, there is a cut off point, by which im sure some people's vision may be bad, but not THAT bad that he cant opperate properly without them, if you get what im saying.

Bottom line with any issue of vision aid, is anyone in the army, especially the infantry, should be able to see, to an acceptable standard, without glasses, so in the event, they were without, they could still operate.

Contacts are allowed, but what happens if you have to cross a river and your head gets submerged? Plus imagine trying to change them in the field with dirty hands, your eyes would get infected.

When i had a eye test 3 months ago my optician said that my eyes are fine for the army, and i can only see the first letter on the chart with my right eye and the first 2 lines with my left. He said there are people with worse who pass.

Shocking.

Who cares, as long as the soldier can fire his weapon straight and kill someone. At the end of the day, thats all that needs to be done.

But like tab says how can you if its freezing and your sweating, your lenses fog up.

Could always carry a spare set.

Mind you whats it like fireing a weapon in a NBC suite?

I know they put your prescription in the gas mask.

Gazza, if you have ever served in the front line then you will find that your pockets and every thing else is packed with food or ammo, what with your webbing and pack and bandoliers of ammo on top of all that
you would take half an hour to find to your spare set of glasses.
James if you can't see just how do you know who you are shooting at, as you say you be knocking them down but are they the right ones, also if your vision is poor just how are you going to judge distances

As for LASIK sergery it is aloud but you have to be around 24 to get it and you have to wait 12 months before joining up.

Gunn ole chum I am not having a go at any one but just pointing out the problems that can be faced, in some jobs like the infantry even more so the para's that you have to much going on rather than worry about glasses
and all the problem that go with them, and as the Army can pick just who they need at the moment then I feel they will go the easy option and place people with glasses in less demanding roles.
