Need advice in fitness

Post by rellim »

I've tried posting this message before but it has not been retained, so I'll give it a go again.

I am currently in the process of trying to get fit for Phase 1 Basic Training in the TA - my fitness is not up to scratch in respect to the running my legs could go on and on but my lungs can't make it past 1.5 miles in 12 minutes. I'm at a real plataeu and can't seem to get past it - need help if poss gents what can you advise in a short space of time.

cheers

Rellim,

Do you train alone? You may wish to consider joining a running club. I happened to find a club run by an ex-rugby leaguer and it made a huge difference. You should also enter races, even 5K or 10K, the competitive spirit will bring out your maximum effort.

The TA will likely take you at a 12 minute 1.5 miles anyway, on my selection weekend there were far worse times than that, don't worry too much about it.

Yes sounds like good advice with the running club and all that although I'm joining an infantry unit and I've been told I to pass the run I have to do it under 10:30 On the selection weekend one guys fitness was so bad he wasn told he would be referred, although I was told I had to get my mile and half down to 10:30 everything else was fine.

Rellim,

Thats just it, they let you in, then encourage you to get fitter. Am I correct in guessing that you've been offered a place in the unit on the condition you continue to train?

You won't likely be booted out for lack of fitness at the beginning. Keep training, if you don't enjoy training, better to stay away from the infantry. Plenty of other units where fitness doesn't seem to be an issue. It could be argued that the TA Signals hired by the pound.

Here's the deal: Run hills. It will build your lung capacity. The test will be done on flat ground, and you'll have an easier (and/or faster) time of it.
