I was having a chat with someone the other day and they were telling me something interesting, and i was wondering if anyone on here had ever heard of it.
During the Balkans war (most recent air war) the Russians had sent a contigent (in support of the serbs) to hold pristina airport. General Wesley Clark who was active at the time ordered a British Airborne General (i believe his name was Michael Rose, correct me if im wrong) to attack the russians. The airborne general snapped and said something along the lines of "Do you expect me to start WWIII??!!"...and nothing more occured.
This comes from a good source and i will try and provide some hard documented proof if i can.
But i was just wondering if anyone else had heard of this.

Wes Clark = Loose Cannon
It was Mike Jackson: "I'm not going to start a bloody war for you!". He's now Chief of the General Staff (and a para) and apparently more whisky than man. A good egg, so they say. I have a mate who met him in Afghanistan recently. He says the Brits are allowed two drinks a day, the Americans none and the Swedish as much they like as long as they get up the next day. Jackson came in and ripped up the piece of paper you sign to say you've had your quota, bellowing: "Drink as much as you want, boys!". He's well respected. I read a piece by an American journalist who compared the two, saying that Clarke was a Pentagon nancy-boy - a 'professional', as Whitey might understand it - and Jackson was a real soldier's man.
It was Mike Jackson who said to Americans let them have the airport, if they can't fly in any aircraft then they can't get fed. Permission was not given for Russian aircraft to overfly the area so the Russian where stuck.
A few days later Mike Jackson went up to Russian with a water bowser and a food truck and suggested that they might be happier closer to thier own lines and if that was case he could arrange it, so ended this problem. The problem came about as there was a delay in some of the American troops arriving on scene and the British troops where delayed so allowed the Russian to have a good head start at the airport. A similar thing happened in Irqa, when the Brits where told to attack Irian troops that had crossed unmarked border and where ordered to attack them. The American General was told to take a running jump, and the whole matter was dealt with by a couple of phone calls.

Yes he (Wesley) is a professional, a word in my military culture that is synonomous with "Twat".
Unfortunatly most of our officer corps is that way. Oh they are brave against the enemy, but won't stick up for their men against their superiors for nothing. Drinking, well in the USMC it was allowed in the field but moderated closely. In the Army you'd get courts martialed for it.
I haven't met an officer over the rank of Captian I thought very well of nor thought well of me, then again I never cared what they thought, most people in my unit were bastaerds raised by their mothers I guess the fact me and my dad raised me cut a big chunk out of our "Have in common" factor.
They say they are all for the troops, but ever get ready for an inspection for 4 months, everything tight and bright and the general officer doesn't even show up. Walks past you arrogantly as you salute and doesn't even return it?
That is unfortunately many of our senoir officers.
How is an NCO supposed to explain that to his soldiers? Or later convey that the command really does care about them? You can't.
They call themselves professional's, and it was this behaviour associated with the word that made me disdain it, moch it and taught those with the glossy boots and pretty uniforms who never did a days haed work for the country. My boots were scuffed brown, uniforms faded from the sun, so worn and stained with salt they had no wrinkles and wouldn't hold a crease, but my section was squared away. We could do our jobs and then some, and we weren't afraid to get dirty. We did the work the other 90% dodged. It was a sort of pride only inmates could have.
But no I respect few if any officers these days and fewer NCO's who are becoming like them.
Thank God for the USMC is all I can say and the USAF.
Our Army has problems and it started with leaders like Clark who thought being a self serving yes man was what service to country was all about.
Professional? I still giggle like a little fagget when I hear the word associated with Army brass.

Whitey your not the first to think like this. This problem has been going on in the US forces post civil war.
There must be something in the training of American officers that creates this resentment among the men.
Because for example, men of the Wehrmacht were almost in love with their NCO's and Officers. Not in a faggy way, but that comraderie that only men can form.

I had the privilage to serve under 'The Prince of Darkness' when he was a Brigadier, top bloke, no messing, understands what your average Tom on the ground wants...He used to be the CO of my old Battalion aswell, well before I joined but by all accounts his men (Non Commissioned) loved him, not so his Officers apparently..

Has anyone commenting on Wes Clark actually read his book? I have, and would be happy to discuss it with anyone who actually read it. The whole thing, not just the cover blurb.

American army officers - well, I did an air assault course in Benning in 94 and their officers were right twats.
The only decent and fair officers were the coloured ie black officers.
This actually shocked me as I thought that the US army had a certain "peoples army" feeling. During the 1st Gulf war they seemed pretty nice (or perhaps they feared hand grenades fragging them in the middle of the night??? ).
