British weapons designations

Post by HighlandSniper58 »

Hi

Can someone please help me with correct British Military "L" series numbers for the following weapons:

7.65mm Walther PPK
9mm SiG-Sauer P226
9mm SiG-Sauer P228
9mm SiG-Sauer P229
9mm Heckler & Koch MP5A3
9mm Heckler & Kock MP5K
5.56mm Heckler & Koch HK53
5.56mm Para Minimi
7.62mm Heckler & Koch G3A3
7.62mm Heckler & Koch G3A4
7.62mm Heckler & Koch G3KA4
.338 Lapua Magnum Long Range Rifle
.50 cal Barrett M82A1
.50 cal Browning M2HB HMG

Clearly some of these weapons are in reatively small-scale service with SF units, but as far as I am aware, all have "L" series numbers allocated.

Hang on Highlander, the lads are pulling on their anoraks, filling their flasks and placing them in old webbing backpacks as I type.

Now then your question was....................Why? :o

Do I have to justify my question? I am not asking for state secrets

In my opinion this is a perfectly justifiable thing to ask, but if is beyond a supposedly British military forum there are other places, but this one seemed an obvious choice.

Despite the supposed military links here, perhaps no-one knows.

Must be a severe dose of PMT going the rounds.
No you don't have to justify your question. I'm only winding you up; but at the same time curious why you would like th einfo. There are plenty of firearms buffs who can probably help. i certainlt can't. I'd suggest a PM to GoreD as he's into that sort of thing.

To satisfy your curiosity, I am a military firearms enthusiast, and I don't have that data - haven't seen it published.

Why would anyone other than an armourer want to know the 'L' numbers??? :-?

It's either a 'Personnel Weapon', a 'Rifle' or a'Bitch to Carry'

Now the french on the other hand do have part numbers for there weopns that begin with 'L'.

'Le Rifel', 'Le Weapen de Personnel', 'Le's Bitch des holdez' and the 'Le's Throw ar'ez Weapoen's down so'as to Surredez' 8)

Thanks Longshot - by looks of your Avatar you look to be a man with similar interests to mine. I suppose one useful reply out of five is verging on the reasonable.

Skiffle - I would have thought that L numbers were of more interest to a storeman than an armourer, but they also happen to be of interest to me. I would never have though that such a simple question would have brought so much negativity.

Edwards 159 - I may not have been onthis board long, but I've already seen enough to doubt what you say - the member's name may not be correct, but I think I know who you mean.

Thanks to those who have attempted to answer my simple query - I'll think more carefully before posting a question again - previously I have only attempted to help other members.
