Walters & Nobbers

Post by JR »

 I have been very reluctant to post this picture due to certain circumstances.
The burial in a jungle clearing Malaya 27th December 1950,due to operational circumstances the body of the Royal Marine was wrapped in his 'poncho' and laid to rest to be recovered at a later date.
'Owdun' may remember who ?.
Image
The point of the outburst is to remind all the 'nobbers','walters' and such like that there's more to service life than sitting on fat arses discussing who, what, where and when, for Christ sake some of you grow up and respect the men like the 'Royal' above who gave you the opportunity to dream.
I now move back to the rear rank and rest my case.Aye JR

Thank you JR for putting all this into prespective...

We all must remember the supreme sacrifice that those we have known and fought alongside, have given on our behalf.

Those who gave their lives in the quest for freedom, our future and that of generation's to come.
Members here, who have served, will have know at least one of those Hero's.

So those of you who have no place in this Forum, may I politely suggest that you quietly Leave.

Next time someone thinks of PMing an ex- serviceman to ask him what it's like to kill a man, look at the picture. Killing has to be done on the battlefield, but nobody wants to brag about it. Just think about it, eh?

Staying in vein with the thread that JR started. While looking through the britains-smallwars site the other day I came across a poem written by, I believe, by John Wedlake, a young serviceman in Aden 1966.

POEM ADEN 1966.

While sun beats down from azore skies
the body weeps in sweaty tears
and dust dries mouth and fills the eyes
each sight and sound brings endless fears
that this or that may end my time
till sanity comes with mocking glance
bringing perfumed dreams of eglantine
that promise home and peace perchance

This place of death mistrust and fear
of mortars, bombs, grenades and arms
with poor and rich, ill versed and seer
so sadly lacking in rural charms
I pray the soughing wind of Silent Valley
whispers not of my eternal rest
instead jet engines roar a final salley
of my departure as a last bequest.

For those who don't know. Silent Valley was one of the cemetaries where the British buried their dead in Aden.

R.I.P.

Aye - Andy.

Jim, a very evocative photograph, if only the doomers could appreciate how moving it is.
The moderators will do their best to restrict them until Beast can remove them. Don't give in.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

As per normal you have hit the nail on the head. As said a picture is worth a thousand words.

I think that gives everyone a real idea of what Marines are all about, and i will be privileged and honoured to eventually serve with such extraordinary men.
