where do i start trying to trace someone?

Hi,
where do i start if i'm trying to trace someone with a Military background?
I am trying to trace a John James who would now be 67 or 68, served in the Navy for 10 yrs between 1955-65 then became a R.R.E ( Some sort oF mod Plod i'm led to believe ) in the Malvern, Worcs area around 1965.
