Hold up peeps...some of you can jump to conclusions some times! Now, when I read the question, it seemed to me to just be trying to fill a gap in what could be a broad knowledge of the Corps...where did the Green Beret originate from? Does the green signify anything in particular?
Although I can also see how you lot interpreted it!
I did read a little about this a while back, but for the life of me I can't remember! I'll look it up for you in the next few days if I remember...

Some of us have been there, done it, and now miss it, Anybody who in one sentence mentions Royal Marines Commandos and in the next sentence asked what the Green Lid is all about. to me needs to get himself sorted big time before he even considers going to CTCRM.
Didnt see you were still at School just lost it when I saw what I thought was a Silly Post. I still think it was a stupid question by the way.
I just get fed up with posts that are inane, repetative, and sometimes embarrassing to the person who posted it. Anybody who wants to know about what it takes to be a Marine by all means PM me or other members of the old and bold, you will get an upfront answer if it is within our sphere of knowledge.

Artist. Reading the question again it does sound a little "thick" and i just want to get across that it was just a blank spot in my knowledge of the corps. i can think of two other regiments off the top of my head in the regular army that have green berets (obviously not meaning the same thing now i know why Royal Marines have the green beret) i just wanted to know why the Royal Marines beret is green.
p.s Artist did you enjoy your time in the Royal Marines? i have wanted to be one since i was ten and now im old enough to join im gonna go for it, it looks great!

Okay Toffee, now you are being thick. The Army regiments you refer to are not regiments, but are parts thereof; eg. 59 Independent Commando Squadron Royal Engineers, 29 Commando Royal Artillery, and 20 Commando Air Defence Battery Royal Artillery. They do wear the Green Beret for the same reason as RM: because they are Commandos. They have passed the Commando Tests just the same as Marines. They retain their unit's cap badge, however. The All Arms Commando Course is open to various personnel from all three Services, so you do get Green Berets floating around in many units.
If I remember rightly the Beret is green because whoever it was decided on the colour (some high up bloke at some point in history - I can't find the bloody book I read it in, will have another look tomorrow) wanted something different to other regiments/units, and had a choice of two colours. Green seemed more fitting with the 'soldiers from the sea' image.
Commandos were originally part of the Army, and it is only comparatively recently (in relation to the 340 years of the Corps) that it has become RM-only as regular training.
Try searching the web or this site, it must be around somewhere, failing that I'll post more detail and dates etc if I can find that damn book...

Toffee
Yes I did enjoy most of my time in the Corp. Some bits no. But thats the same in any walk of life really.
Apart from the Commandos (all attached to the Royal Marines) the only other members of the Army to wear a Green Beret are the Light Infantry/Royal Green Jackets, A dark green colour that was the colour of the uniform worn in the Napolionic wars (If you have seen the TV series Sharp it's the same colour as the uniforms worn by Sharpes men). And the Intelligence Corp. (a Very bright green one, havent got a clue where that comes from mind)
The Commando Beret colour as far as I am aware originated from Mr Churchill's fertile mind as did the name. (The Army Commandos where first called SS units as in Special Service. Not good PR considering what the German SS did in the Second world war) Commando being an Africana word used for the raiders on horseback who attacked the rear area bases of the British Troops in the Boar War between 1898 and 1905.
