new recruit

Post by harry »

hi peeps,

this is my first post on these forums.

i'm currently in the recruiting process, having just passed the RE and RT tests, at artificer level, and have an interview this week. i am a bit nervous about the PJFT though, as I do not run alot, but a recent run around my local area, which is approx. 1.5 miles, i finished in 11m 48s. was tough though, and i felt like giving up towards the end.
i guess it is all in the mind though,if you think you're gonna fail, you probably will. :(

anyway, question is, how extreme is HMS Raleigh? i'm guessing its not as tough as marine training, but is it army style training?

just passed the interview, and now onto the medical and pjft.

after a couple of days, i am finding the 1.5 mile run not so tough, although i have never run on a treadmill before (i've seen the carnage they cause on jackass!)

is the medical anything to worry about? they don't do the "please cough sir" thing anymore I hope.........

lol they did the drop and cough test on my TA medical so I'd expect they do it for the RN ones too. Luckily there was no touchy touchy, he might just have been scared to go near it though :o

Good luck mate.

Yes they do.

In fact I hated every second of my medical. Having some middle aged man stare at me, with me wearing just a pair Calvins was a little uncomfortable to say the least lol

Necessary evils are a real bitch.

i don't understand what the cough and drop is supposed to test?
are they supposed to giggle up and down when you cough, or maybe they are just checking you have two....

maybe they get a lot of transexuals joining up?

the thing with the medical is (pardon the pun), 'out of your hands', there is nothing you can train or practise to do for it. you either pass or fail. i don't drink or take drugs which is a bonus I guess........

Cough and drop is to test your testicles have dropped into position and you havent got any hernias.
Your testes drop when you pass through puberty.

You´ll get more questions than actual examinations. They´ll amongst other things, check your chest for lung sounds and heart sounds and general physiology. Under your armpits and elbows etc for signs of any rashes. Ears, eyes, throat. Joint reflexes, pulses at wrist and ankles.
You´ll be asked to squat touch your toes etc etc, urine test, cough and drop, family history, allergies, and fractures serious injuries, the list goes on but isnt to exhaustive.
You will also get another medical whilst at Raleigh. If your healthy nothing really to worry about. Its not a test as with other tests, if theres something wrong then they´ll advise you what it is and make a decision from there.
Dont worry about it, just concentrate on your preperation and fitness.
Good luck

damn, i was gonna down a whole jar of golden syrup before the test aswell!
someone else told me to stay away from sugar energy, as it is only a temporary energy boost, then you hit the wall of pain. guess its best to avoid any stimulant, especially caffine.

i'd better give a week detox in advance....

high levels of sugar indicate kidney problems or diabetes.

Yeah I got told to see my GP to get a liver test after the doc found something wrong in a test, turned out fine though. They also told me that energy drinks like lucazade and red bull can make your heart rate a bit irratick and that could show up as a heart problem on your tests. Best to steer clear of anything like that aswell.

red bull is actually illegal in France due to the high levels of caffeine in it!

A couple of people on my OASC got told they had a slight heart murmur, but it was quite common under stress, and not to worry about it!
