Failed PRMC.

Post by ashley »

My arms packed in during the bottom field. I'm quite disappointed in myself as I really thought I could beat the course and come away with a pass. Other than that it was awesome there, not really 'enjoyable'... but it wouldn't be Royal Marines training if it could be enjoyed. Really helped me decide what I want to do. However, not for a few years. I'm still 17 and there was a lot of guys on my course in their early twenties, obviously with more life experience. Even if I had passed I think I would have given it some serious thought, as it would be wasting my time and others time if I wasn't willing to give 200% during basic. So, I guess I'm not totally gutted, as I've learned a lot from it.

I doubt I will update my thread at the top about the selection process.

However, some pointers:

Do NOT wrap, unlike me. I wrapped because my upper body wasn't prepared as well as it should have been...

Your hands do not belong in pockets, and pockets have buttons for a purpose. Same with shoelaces, and drawstrings and whatnot... they are there to be tied.

Your face was not designed to be touched in gymnasiums. Do not try otherwise.

If the chance arises to show initive, take it.

Yeah, that about sums some of it up...

However, let us canabalise your experience for our benefit. What were your various scores on the various tests?

Pressups - 40
Situps - 47
Pullups - 5
Bleep - 11

Pretty poor scores. At home I've hit 60 pressups, 60-70 situps, 6 pullups however I hadn't practised the VO2.

Hmm, them scores don't look bad at all to me. Did the PTI's take many pressups/situps off you for bad form? Alot of people churn out 50-60 pushups but only end up with 30-40 because they get deducted.

If you decide to take some time off before you do PRMC again remember to keep fit. Pain in the ass trying to get fit again.

How did your arms pack in the the bottom field?

Sorry to hear that mate, I guess it really does come down to whether or not you actually want to be there badly enough.

Better luck next time if you decide to pursue it.

Cheers, Brent

Arms packed in on bottom field?? No. I take it you wrapped?? Don't mean to sound harsh, but bottom field is all about keeping going, if your arms give, you get back up, etc. Did they fail you, or did you fail yourself?? The scores you posted before going down were very good, how come you let yourself down??

Yeah, my arms just turned to jelly. No matter how hard I strained to push pressups out I couldn't. Though by that point I wasn't even sure I'd start basic even if I passed... so even though I tried my hardest, it just wasn't going to happen. So I withdrew myself.

I'm probably going to wait 2-3 years until I attempt it again. Which is plenty of time to prepare myself.

You may be disappointed if you fail,

There's nothing wrong with what Arameis said. He's right, I wrapped because I wasn't as committed to it as I should have been. Simple as that.

Hats off to you Ashley for facing up to it and being honest with yourself - at least you haven't spun some crap about injury (shin-splints anybody? ) You know where it is if you fancy another go. At least you've had the balls to go down there and try. Good luck with whatever you decide to do in the future. I think your admission shows a lot of character.

Right, I'm not digging at you personally, because I know it's hard to perform well there and tests are never done in ideal conditions.....and I know how touchy some of the potentials (or not as the case may be  )can be about this kind of comment.........but is someone pulling my plonker about those scores being good? :o Not to put too fine a point on it if that's a pass then I'm glad I'm out of it.

Cheers, Sully, it makes a lot more sense when someone who's been there and done it has something to add.

When I spoke to the Corporal before I left he said my scores 'weren't too bad'. Honestly, I was expecting him to tell me they were shit, because that's what I thought they were... especially my situps.

In the mean time I'm going to go to college (Even though I know I'll hate it, I feel it's a sensible thing to do) and do AS levels in History, Bullshi- I mean, Politics ;) and something else, most likely English or Maths. Then attempt PRMC again when I feel I'm ready for the commitment that would entail.

Somone can have all the determination in the world, but if you are not totally commited it won't matter.

I think going in at age 17 is pretty young and you'd have to ABSOLUTELY know if it was the right thing to do if you're going in that early. Go see the world and get a few jobs and shag some good looking gal's before you join the corp. At least you know what CTC is like now to a degree so you can experiece civvie street and come back when you're totally commited.

Ash, I never would have made it at that age for various reasons. I was 26 when I joined. You've got stacks of time to have a good look at what else this rich tapestry of life can offer. It might be worth looking into the TA or RMR while you're at college.
