Joining the RAMC

Post by Abilius »

hi all,

I have some questions about joining the RAMC as a potential officer, i would be much appreciated if anyone can answer my questions.

First of all, I m a chinese, just wondering but how many chinese are in the british army?

Also I have been offered by my career advicer a cadetship scheme, but in the letter from the RAMC, they said I can also apply for a bursar while my career advicer said I can't. I am very confused about this, can anyone kindly help? :-?

and lastly, what is the risk factor being an army doctor.

Thanks :)
I don't know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Are you thinking of joining the Army as a doctor or as a commissioned officer in the RAMC? Are you familiar with the distinction between the two?

Re: the path to either career, if you join as a doctor you attend a 4 week course at Sandhurst to give you the basic knowledge of the Army you need in order to practice medicine in the Army. This probably takes place after you complete medical school but I'm not sure.

Joining the RAMC as a commissioned officer means you are in command of the soldiers and NCO's who man Company, Regimental aid posts close to the front lines, who drive ambulances, which may be armoured. There is the opportunity to go through P-Coy and command the medics attached to 16 Air assault Bde. By a long shot the more risky of the two.

The second option also means you attend Sandhurst for 42 weeks' leadership training as you are a commander of soldiers, not a doctor.

As for your Chinese ancestry, you might be able to find out through the following site what percentage of personnel identify Chinese as their ancestry/race? http://www.dasa.mod.uk/

I have no idea. Try contacting the RAMC via the AFCO, I'm sure they'll be able to tell you even if you're joining as a doctor. Good luck.

Hi Abs, good to see another medic on board -or potential one anyway-. If you are a naturalised citizen then there should be no problem. The army do run a bursary scheme for Doctors ,Dentists etc contact Officer Entry RAMC, DMSTC, Keogh Bks, Ashvale. Surrey.

Garry, are you sure that address is correct? I can't find the address for Keogh itself, but the co-located museum lists itself as:

AMS Museum
Keogh Barracks
Ash Vale
Aldershot
GU12 5RQ

Ref; http://www.army.mod.uk/medical/ams_museum/index.htm

And while I'm here, I was looking around the site and on the Combat Medical Technician page, I noticed the file name for the top picture, "medic2soft.jpg" Am I reading too much into this or does a particular web designer not have a high opinion of these chaps :-? ?
