Post by lew »

I have just finished watching the first programme of what seems to be a short series on dunkirk, I found it facinating and extreamly well done...

Did anyone else watch this??? what were your opinions of it, are there any dunkirk suvivors in the forum who watched the programme, how true to life is it???

thanks...

My father was in northern France just before Dunkirk happened.
Because he lied about his age when he joined up (17 years old) ,they thought he was 19 years old.
In fact he was 18 and when they found out they sent him home to Woolwich barracks(He returned with his kit which was a gas mask, tin helmet, gas cape, boot brushes).
You were not allowed to serve abroad untill you were 19 unless in the Navy.
Just think if he was a year older he might have not survived, then i wouldnt have been here.
I watched the programe with him last night, which started him telling me the time he spent in the war.Fate played a big part in your survival.
Blimey, fate eh.

No I didn’t, bloody football was on TV and in this house it wouldn’t matter if world war 3 was breaking out, the football would still be on :x :o

I recorded it, because I was down the pub watching England, so I'll watch it later on tonight, sounds like a good watch :o

Lew I can't believe you hate football so much, especially when it's england I can understand about club but not country. Doesn't matter what sport I'm always 100% behind England, even if I don't like that sport.

Thanks OSB I nearly forgot about that. Very well done, though I didn't like the cutting between archive and new footage, sort of made it feel a bit low budget to me. How far into the war is the series going to go? Will it cover the soldiers sent to counter attack in brittany?

I've heard a few bad things about the French soldiers at Dunkirk recently, apparently 100,000 free french soldiers were given priority to be evacuated but only 7000 stayed to fight with the British, the rest just went back to France. Is there any truth to that?

Jason, I’m not a big sports fan for starters, and find most of it mundane and boring, I’d rather watch a good film… Don’t get me wrong I love my rugby but that’s about it...

As for hating football so much, the reason is this, they're all wimpy little gob shites, who cant take a proper hit to save their life, I cant stand the way they role around on the floor grabbing there ankles with the look of agony on there faces :o it actually makes me feel sick that these boys call themselves men and are so respected by kids, who grow up to act the same way...

I know its been said before and I hate to sound pedantic, but, kids should have good role models and there is no better place for them to look than sport, I just wish they would grow up to play rugby, (a real game) and take on any one of the England rugby team as their hero, idol, call it what you will, and ditch that dopey sod beckham...

Sorry to rant and rave about It and hi jack my own thread  just something I wanted to clear up...

Well lew your right when you say I cant stand the way they role around on the floor grabbing there ankles with the look of agony on there faces. But not every one does that, If I had it my way I would like it to go back to the old days when they didn't act like pussy when they get tackled. When the game was more hard and rougher, but that's not going to happen. I respect your views lew we are all entitled to them :)

My old man's off to Scotland to watch England, beat the Scots.

Sorry to rant and rave about It and hi jack lew's thread  just something I wanted to clear up...

Back to the subject in hand I watched last nights programme and found it good viewing. Only problem was I only record half of the first programme, some one pissed about with the recording.

Old Scaly Back

Your father was lucky to be sent back becuase he was under 19 years of age, I wonder when they changed this rule, as they were not so fussy about sending National Servicemen into action who where only 18.
