MOD U TURN

Post by BERTAVFC »

Having previously been turned down for the royal marines due to my eyesight, I was pleased to hear that the MOD has changed it's policy on candidates who have received laser eye surgery. The problem is they say that there are still factors which affect your suitability, the type of surgery and time since it was carried out ect. My local AFCO in it's wisdom will not tell me what these 'factors' are until the surgery has been carried out and I Re-apply!. Any information regarding this will be Very gratefully received, Cheers Rob :D

I too would very much like to get confirmed facts on this!

I too would need to get my eyes lasered to get into the Marines. Ive only recently started training (I held off since I figured my entry would get barred) but I thought what the hell, you only get one dream in your life and decided to give it my shot anyway, your either 120% into it or not right? I still have 2 years until I finish college to train, the constant thought of me getting shot down before I have a chance to get to Lympstone is a bit of an annoyance though!

Still, keeping the training up, also changed college course to public services, staying focused and determined, I have heard rumours of MO's turning blind eyes to lasered eyes and people actually on PRMC/Basic with lasered eyes also, still, it always seems to be "a friend".

Any solid info would be much appreciated.

All the best,
Rock

How bad is your eyesight for you to be barred entry? My eyesight isnt too bad but I still wear glasses and contact lenses. When I went to the AFCO, I was told my eyesight wouldnt be a problem as long as it wasnt too bad.

Dont trust that LES. Too expensive as well.

since i was about 15 i was told by my optician top wear glass.. when i had my eyes tested at my medical they told me i had perfect vision and that there was no need for me to wear glasses.. does this mean my eyes have got better through time or does it mean my optician was just getting money out of me?

GLasses can make you eyes better, I think you eyes correct themselves over time if you problem isnt to severe.

i never wear glasses or contacts, but my eyes aren't perfect, i had my eyes tested a while back and was told that i should be wearing glasses. The truth about eyes is that if you have slightly bad vision and wear glasses, your eye sight will deteriorate over time until eventually you need more powerfull lenses in your glasses, and so on. This is because the natural lense in the eye gets 'lazy' because the glasses are doing all the focusing, and so your eye sight deteriorates. My father at my age had only slightly bad vision, but now he is in his 60s and he has terrible eye sight. What i am saying is scientific fact i studied this kind of thing in biology.

well, i cant see without my lenses, and ive heard other people say similar to you yuri, so why the hell do they make them? u think i should maybe stop wearing glasses at home and see if it helps? =D

LES is my only option, I sure as hell dont wanna quit, so Im figuring I may as well give it a shot.

The best,
Rob

They can correct themselves as you grow physically - the shape of the eye will change and your sight may get better because of this.
