Swimming

Post by robj »

Just a quick question....

Is swimming everyday bad for you like running? Or is it ok to do this?

Or is it best to only do it about 4/5 times a week?

Swimming won't muck up your knee joints like running sometimes does, but you can still suffer from overtraining (muscle fibres being destroyed at a faster rate than being produced) so I would only ever train a maximum of 5 days per week whatever sport it was.

During training for PRMC, is it advised to swim three to five times a week about a mile each time? People who have passed recently, what do you advise? Also, is it better that one swims with or without fins?

Cheers, Brent

Swimming is good as it does put less stress on your joints. But as ph1l said you can still over do it. The common injury with competitive swimming is swimmers shoulder, which is an overuse injury.

Like any exercise it is wise to progressivley introduce a greater frequency of sessions and effort.

Swimming is also very good for using most of the large muscle groups at the same time.

I used to swim 7-9 times a week for years, it does get a little boring!

It is good to use fins sometimes to increase the use of the muscles in your legs .

How do you swim continuously for that long? I get knackered after 25m and can just about make the retuern leg. Then I have to rest for about 2 minutes before I struggle again.

Im just one of these 'average' swimmers. I would lose a race if I was against any decent opposition but would beat my mates, if you get me!

I started competitive swimming when i was about 9 years old, and stopped competing fully when i was 20. It's one of those sports that you have to put a lot of training in, to only race a relatively short distance.

I only swim once a week at the moment for about an hour, knock out about 3000metres.

It is a very good activity, but like i said before, it's like running, if you're on your own it can get boring!
