We spell mom like that here in Canada too mate, you spell it mum they mark off as a error. Most words are the same such as colour not color. Fools!

Im perfectly English thank you very much i just prefer MOm as in MOther, mum when spoken sounds common, ive just always said mom actually i refer to my parents by there given name but if started saying "well at least thats what Julies says" you'd be thinking who the hells that.
