scottfoxy,
Put your beer in the main compartment,
should hold at least 36 cans.
Put the other 12 cans in the side pooches, then
strap your slug to the top, neatly rolled so as
when you fall backwards you dont bang your
head mate.
200 ciggies should fit in your windproof.
everything you need immediately ie waterproofs, warm kit, fluids etc should be easily accessible so they go in side pouches or top of begran maing sure they are waterproofed. Then work your way down your bergan with stuff in order of priority its normally a matter of individual taste or trail and error just try to think about what u nedd first ie you dont want to have to take your sleeping bag out just cause you need to make a brew. Your sleeping bag should of come with a compression sack to get it a bit smaller I always kept mine near the bottom of my bergan along with spare clothing and try and get your bergan to ride high on your back
They way we are told is that top flap is left empty (dont ask why ).
Left pouch is bivvi cover and waterproofs.
Right pouch is spare rations, water bottle, flask etc.
Main part is helmet (Shouldn't think you need one of those )
dhobi kit
sleeping bag (in its sack nice and small) and bivvi bag.
towel and spare clothing (in a sealed bag)
As you wont have webbing, mess tins, cooker, other water bottle and stuff can go in somewhere where you can get at them.
There are 3 kinds of people: those who can count & those who can't.
I packed mine as follows, but it was after a bit of trial n error:
warm kit - waterproofed , bottom of bergen. Only needed it at night when out of mingin wet day clothes and needin to get my head down for kip.
sleeping bag - top of bergen. Forget about compression bag, when you have to 'bug' out of a bivvy/basha you aint got time to neatly roll it back in anyway. Your bergen becomes your compression bag! Often my sleeping bag would be inside my bivvy and that would get stuffed in too.
wet stuff - waterproofs, basha, bivvy, bungees, paracord etc - a side pouch, dont matter what side.
rations/water, utilities - wash, firstaid, personal admin - other side pouch.
water bottle - rear pocket.Easy for your 'buddy' to get for you when your at a rest point on a tab.
roll mat - secured tight with 1 bungee vertically to back restraint loops.I Prefered this way as it kept my profile minimal.
map, notes, compass, torch - outer pocket lid, easy to get to.
hardcore scandinavian 'jazz mags' - inner pocket lid, less likely for anyone else to find...hehe just kidding.
Of course this is very basic but you get the jist. Rubbish etc must be carried and also extra ammo (if called for) and possibly other spare items.Just think 'small, neat and orderly' and pack so that important items are to hand.
ive always been taught that in the side pocket with the daysack yoke on is to be filled with wetproof jacket some spare food change of socks and first aid kit basha kit and a warm item

He is only going tabbing over the hills so it wont matter about getting bugged out Just pack the bergan depending on the situation ie if its is for tabbing , exercise or just a walk at the weekend. Buy a german army fold up roll mat it will fit in the bergan nicely and give some extra padding for your back looks better as well
Yes I agree with the German folding mat, excellent bit of kit and its what I use when I'm in the hills hiking at the weekends.
I also agree with the above posts in that pack for the situation but the general consensus is to have what you need to hand!
Personally when I'm up in the lakes most weekends when I set up camp my basha or tent is pitched then my sleeping bag is out first and slung under the canopy.Like I said its trial n error but I do find that packing heavier items to the top of my bergen distributes the weight far more comfortably.
As for 'buggin out' that only happens when some farmer type says 'get orf my laaaand you c~nt!!!'...
Us Jocks don't even need to worry about that, I think I'm right in saying that under Scottish law anyone can cross over any farmers land unless the farmer has appealed to the council and made his land off-limits, which isn't very often. But of course if the farmer asks you nicely to leave, courtesy (sp?) says you should.

Is the main pack attached to a 'Yoke'? or is it an all in one bergen?
What's it's capacity in litres?
As a rule of thumb, arrange your kit in the order that you will need it through the day. the more immediate stuff at the top or in your side pouches, and the sleeping bag at the bottom.
The main thing is fitting the sleeping bag in. if you can get it in horizontally, then you'll save so much space.
Also, try compartmentalising your kit in smaller bags or "stuff sacks", preferably waterproof. tight.
