Can people spot 'Walter'?

Post by gunner75 »

Until recently I did not know that people existed that pretended they were special forces super hero warlord types and that they were affectionately known as 'Walters'. It makes me chuckle because looking back to when I was a recruit in 4 para our PTI used to always put on his lid and sneer 'You Walter types will only wear this when your in the pub having jackonory with the punters'....needless to say us recruits didnt have a clue as to what he was on about, but now I do.
Are there any blatantly obvious or suspect 'Walter' types on this site? You know the ones that are that dodgy their funny? If so can someone point them out! It'd be interesting to find out what gives them away...

Mate

This seems to have been pet topics of people recently because it is so funny. Those of us who are not SF/Para or whatever (and probably will never be) are deeply amused by the occassional muppet who tries to claim he's been there and done that. Because those who have deserve more respect than that.

Some are very obvious, some not so...but it's not just this site, in life as well. People who have never been involved with the forces are very obvious because they miss a certain attitude and way of speaking. Those who know something of the forces and are ex-something are harder to spot.

If anyone just comes out with...I was ex _ _ _ _ or whatever in the pub it's probably bollocks. The problem is though (especially on here) that many will know enough to ask them pertinent questions to pove whether they're talking bollocks or not. If they're second post is 'I'm an SBS NCO' it's pretty dubious. Some of the highlights have been though....

And the Maverick one

This is one of the most interesting as Jim T (asking the question) knows what he's talking about....

Incidentally there are some very funny stories of people who aren't even SF or whatever but start claiming to be Guards Officers and so on (to other Guards Officers in this case)....which I find highly odd. I wouldn't admit to being one if I was let alone claim to be one if I wasn't.

Sp10122,

Sorry, I forgot to answer a question you raised a while ago. Officers promoted from the ranks in all 21, 22 and 23 SAS are usually listed in the Army List.

However they are listed under a peculiar heading and NOT SAS, I remember searching all over for my entry (as you do) and only recognised the list from my and several other names. Fair startled the rest of the library with my shout of 'gotcha'. :o

Well said Sticky...it's funny isn't it. It's almost a feel you get.....Mercer's book, for example, is one of those who didn't feel right. Although I could hardly say I've had a great deal to do with the SBS I could tell it wasn't quite right.

I've just found a site with the ultimate walter. Well, he has nothing to do with the military but he does have some fantastic claims, the main one being that he is from the future! :o and even more incredible he got people to believe him!! :o :o

It's all here www.johntitor.com
