SAS or SBS

Post by Aldo »

Im waiting to go to the PRMC and hopefully become a marine. But whats after that, should i join the SBS (marine special forces) or the SAS. Ive heard alot about both but cant make my mind up.

Ive heard that the SBS are more elite than the SAS, because they do a more arduous selection and that the government trusts them more with important missions. Is there any truth to this?

On the other hand the SAS are widley known to be an extremely elite unit and could have a wider range of operations (therefor more action :2gunfire:  :D )

So what do you lads think, I would appreciate it if someone whos actually served with them thinks.

Aldo, this question has been asked time and time again on this forum, A may come before B in the alphabet, but it sure as hell doesn`t in the world of SF. endex

Aldo,
I would follow lew's advice first. Then if you make it through training, do a tour with a commando unit to gain experience. After that you can chose between SAS or SBS - but I can't understand anyone with an RM background wanting to join a bunch of Percy Pongoes - albeit an "elite" one, when you have a perfectly fine body of men WITH a Royal Marine background that are also "elite". In fact, so "elite" that they have to undergo further training, (after passing the joint selection) just to make it into the SBS. By the time you get that far, you will understand what "Per Mare, Per Terram" and "Esprit de Corps" means.
Good luck!!

I can see your proud of the SBS there, I'm a little bit scared to tell the truth lol :o

Like I said that was a while ago so I don't know if I ever will decide to go on selection, just put it down to youthful ambition :P . Just out of interest what made you want to go down the SB route?

Being now regarded as one of the "Old and Bold", we didn't have the choice of joining the SAS unless you left the RM and joined the Army.
Even given today's flexibility I still would not have joined the SAS. The SBS do many more things that the SAS don't do - mostly to do with water. That is what makes the SBS "special" and irrecoverably linked to the Royal Marines.
I also had a Globe and Laurel as a cap badge and that was on a "green lid". It was hard earned and I would not have given it up lightly.
I feel quite strongly about this and you could follow that on the SF thread about the SBS Cap Badge.

Aldo, if I remember correctly it was the commanding officer of the SBS who oversaw the badge change, not the government.

I hope thats not true but if it is... :o  :o  :o

I couldn't imaging a Royal wanting to give up his lid and badge, unless it wasn't a Royal.

For me sbs are just as good as the sas, in terms of training and selection however the sas is trained in alot more roles i.e mountain, air, boat, mobilty.
