1300 metres

I read recently, I think it was on Leatherneck, about a sniper with 40 (?) who hit a gunman at 1300 metres, 19 metres windage and 13 metres elevation. Anybody else see or hear about this?

Yes it was fact they interviewed said sniper on TV during the War.
What a shot. They had to take two guys out at the same time which if you watched the program on sky is a major exercise these days for snipers.
Poor buggers have to be able to tell the time now and use a radio.
But Sir I just joined to shoot people.........


A bit of a change these days you actually get a valet to carry your bags when your a sniper, sorry yes I know they are both snipers but only one rifle between two these days and one scope. Cut backs I ask you.

Not quite the same....however....

When I shot at Bisley for the Corps, running alongside the military competition is the Target Rifle Competition. Now these guys were getting 8 inch groups at 1000 yards with IRON SIGHTS.

I know it`s not the same as a combat scenerio, but worth a mention.

Funnily enough most use rifles from the same manufcturer
Accuracy International
32" barrels, diopter sights, .308 (7,62x51) cal
Using usually 150 grain bullets to keep them supersonic to 1000 yds

Use google to search for sniper. Bit late now, so can`t be arsed, meself. I do know there are several sites with statistics on, ref max range, max kills etc. Checked it out with bro in law after recent Ed Harris fillum about snipers in Rusia( Vassily?)

My rifle was a Remmington 243 with a x 12 scmitt and Bender swat sight. firing a semi jacketed round. It seemed a pity to give up nice wooden stocks and grips, but all in black it was and looked a good tool of the trade.

I havent shot the AI rifles you guys use, But I've shot plenty of M-40's anyone here shot both? whats your likes and dislikes if so?

Is the M-40 the Remington 700 derivative that the US forces use?
These sort of rifles are rather boring to shoot untill you get to 600m and beyond, because you then have the chance of not hitting the bullseye

From memory I think the first guy to use .50 round was a US Marine called Sgt Charles(or Chuck or Carlos?) Hatchcock or similar. He fixed a scope to a .50 cal Browning HMG in Vietnam. From his experiences, Barret went on to start the ball rolling with .50 cal sniper rifles.

The A.I. is basically a competition rifle in green! I have fired it in combination with a Shmitt and Bender scope with duplex reticle.

I found it to be no more accurate than my own Steyr SSG with a Picar scope with post reticle. This was back as far as 800m using Radway Green 7.62mm fully jacketed ammo.

The Steyr, though basic looking when compared to the A.I. has superb intrinsic accuracy, 1 1/4" groups being possible at 500m (no wind presumably) so I think its down to the operator and not the tools!

A few years ago someone set a record with a .50BMG rifle.
Sub 1 inch group at 1000 yards or meters I think.
Its not as impressive as it sounds as it was off hand shooting, ie rifle clamped into position and only finger touching trigger.

Do you ever get the feeling that a question was maybe better unasked? Spotters scrambling out of the veneer as fast as Bombay Runners to pile information on the site.
My personal favourite was a Loony Toons 1/4 scale star burster, with a ZZZZZZipppppp sound when the trigger was repeatedly squeezed as a red light flashed in the end where the pointy thing pops out.
