Reasons for hanging in there...

Post by dan »

A little question for you old and bold...

When you were down at CTC and experiencing all the joys or recruit training; mud, lack of sleep, beastings, rain, icy temperatures et al, what were the things that you hung onto to keep going? I'd imagine it must be difficult to stay motivated at 3 in the morning in the middle of a river with an 80lb pack on your back!

Oh, and perhaps the 30 miler Charity event could be supporting 'Help the Aged' and Rob could benefit directly...Sorry Rob, that was just cruel!

Dan.....What wot motivation....... Switch Brain OFF and grit your teeth
I guess the run ashore in Exmouth hasent changed, we had the Palais
and a wonderfull geriatric four piece band, they always looked so pissed off and knackered that we thought they would fall off their chairs.
As for trapping, forget it all the crumpet were either the daughters of Rupert or NCO's...

The thing that kept me going at 3 in the morning, in the middle of a river, with an 80lbs pack on my back, was the stark truth that staying there wasn't an option!
However, on speed marches and the 30 miler etc I made sure I was with a guy called Derek Hall, a Geordie ex-miner I travelled down to Deal with from Newcastle. He was short and stocky, and he 'disappeared' when he had all his kit on. He had twice the challenge any of us had, but you knew he was going to make it. I followed Derek, and thought, 'If you can do it 'Kit with legs', so can I.
He was also the best, quickest, digger of trenches I've ever seen.!

It was the promise of a single room with en-suite facilities, company car (green/black), salary to be banked because everything was on the house and summer hols in the Med. That's when you wake up having fallen in said river, being held down by said bergen and realising it's colder than before you dozed off. 8)
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

I think that what kept me going was the fear of not making it - when all my oppos were doing it - and how that would look afterwards -

I don't think that there were any girls in Exmouth when I was there....
Just a pie shop.

Anyway - when all this was finished and the beret in place I joined Sigs and was given an even bigger pack ... with radio, extra batteries etc.....

I agree that we Geordies are ok to have around for the digging though,
and not being so tall makes for a canny size slit trench..... ne bother,
ye others can bend ya knees like.... watch out for the foreman.
