Hoping to be an Aircraft Engineer Technician

Post by zrichi »

Hi all I'm 22 and looking to get a role in the above.

I've got my interview on the 14th. Can someone go through what normally happens? Just so I'm a little prepared for tests etc.

Can any Aircraft Techs give me a run down of how life is for them? What social opportunities arise, travelling and what they enjoy/dislike working on what aircraft they've been assigned? I think I'd like to work on Harriers just because they look beautiful but I wouldn't mind the Lynx, Merlin or Seaking though.

Are you usually stationed on base?etc...just anything you can think of.

Thanks

Having been rocketed across the province and desert in a Lynx I can tell you it is still an awesome bit of kit but once you've seen a Harrier in full combat you'll become a full time believer!

Zrichi, first off well done for going down to the AFCO.

Secondly choice of Aircraft, few points.

Depends on what role you are going in for, airframe, engines, avionics etc.

The RN maintainers are also jack of all trades so they refuel and move the Sqn aircraft as well as keep them in great condition.

As to the choice of Aircraft, all types will go to Sea although the amount of time will vary.

Lynx (Grey), you will be on a small ship with a small det and be part of the ships company. A fair amount of time away unless you go onto the training Sqn.

Merlin/SK7 probably a fair amount of time on ship usually as part of a bigger det,

Commando Sqns, either SK 4's or Lynx Mk 7, "probably" the hardest worked part of the FAA, when you are not on Ex or training you will be on Ops supporting 3 Commando Brigade or the Army in Hot and Sandy places. Great bunch to work with.

Harriers, based with the rest of Harrier Force and working flat out in Afghan. Thing may be changing for them though.

Ah sweet. Think I'm gonna go down the mechanical route as opposed to avionics and I think I'll work on the Lynx.

Any idea on how I can improve my mechanical comprehension for the test coming up? I ot 9/10 on al the tests in the practice booklet except mechanical comprehension!
