SAS boat troop.
Why? Surely that's the point of the SBS.
Ryan, think about it, you have to have many strings to your bow.
Why does the Navy have the Fleet Air Arm, the RM and the SBS?
Why does the Army have the Army Air Corps?
Why does the RAF have the RAF Regiment? (thats a toughie)
Every Arm has to have specialists in various fields, you could ask why have the SBS when you have the SAS?

The RCT also had their own navy (of sorts)timex wrote:Ryan, think about it, you have to have many strings to your bow.

The RAF also had its own navy, the Air Sea Rescue who did a wonderful job during the Battle of Britain. I understand that the rescue launches are now defunct.timex wrote: Why does the RAF have the RAF Regiment? (thats a toughie)![]()

If my information is correct, the SBS also took part in lifting the Iranian Embassy siege.timex wrote: Every Arm has to have specialists in various fields, you could ask why have the SBS when you have the SAS?

As far as I know, the closest thing to a rescue launch we've got these days is an MS10...
They certainly didn't get a mention on my SERE course!

I was doing a search on the SBS regarding another question, from the information I gleaned from various sources, the SBS took part in Operation Nimrod with the SAS.

Iranian Embassy Siege
The Iranian Embassy Siege of 1980 was a terrorist siege of the Iranian embassy in London, United Kingdom. The siege was ended when British special forces, the Special Air Service (SAS)and the Special Boat Service (SBS), stormed the building in Operation Nimrod. The incident brought the SAS to the world's attention as the whole episode was played out in the media.

1980: SBS members played a part in the 1980 Iranian Embassy Siege.
As I wasnt there I cannot confirm this information.

I noticed that - it is contrary to all other information though. It's one of those things that i doubt the media will've got the whole story.BritinAfrica wrote:Yep,Seraph wrote:Your information?BritinAfrica wrote:If my information is correct, the SBS also took part in lifting the Iranian Embassy siege.

I have know Idea how much It would cost to run, but It Is In good condition. We asked once If we could take It for a bit of a spin on the Solent, we got a sharp no chance.BritinAfrica wrote:I couldnt afford the petrol to run it.Hands on wrote:There Is one of the old RAF launches tied up alongside one of the Mulberry piers In Marchwood looking for a good home.
I dread to think what the fuel consumption was.
The story goes that It had come from a museum that had closed down and there was know where else for It to go.
Would have thought that it was obvious that the SBS were not involved in the Iranian Embassy siege.
1 It was not raining.
2 Not cleared for a para drop into the Lake at Hyde Park.
3 Could not approach via sewers due to 'elf and safety'.
As regards the SAS 'Boat Troop'!!!!
Strange no one has mentioned the colour of the boat house!!!!

lol I reckon the "No chance" was because of the fuel she'd burn, with 3 Napier Sea Lion 500 hp engines and at a quid a litre you'd probably need to take out a second mortgage.Hands on wrote:I have know Idea how much It would cost to run, but It Is In good condition. When I was in UK there was a ex RN WW2 MTB parked off at Maldon in Essex. I was surprised how big she was.
