Unfortunately this technology only works if the round is supersonic.
It does not detect the source of the projectile unless the muzzle velocity is high enough.
Even then triangulation is difficult.
Works well on a deranged deer hunter with a death wish

You are correct, it was an echo location system, it never got issued though as far as I can remember.
