Can anyone identify the regiment/corps from the badges/buttons on this image of Grandad's (1st WW) uniform?

Shaun, welcome aboard mate
That photy isn`t very clear ref the buttons. Looks like the Dog and Basket (Lion and Crown ) over a ship`s wheel.
I`m intrigued
What else is on the buttons and what is the detail on the cuffs?

Buttons are plain old General Service type so no help there, pity he was so enthusiastic about cleaning his collar dogs, but as Tab says only thing for certain is they are Victorian period.
The white facings (or maybe buff) are pretty common for line infantry of that period.
Anything else you might have may be of some help.

Scaned in at 600dpi - but the photo is old... Cuffs and hands not in original photo.harry hackedoff wrote:Shaun, welcome aboard mate

My father thought grandad was in the Service Corps.
As for his Army record - well, thereby hangs a tale ... came across from Ireland (N) and joined up, but - as far as we know - not under his own name. Boer War came to a close, so he joined the Navy, but didn't tell the Army he had left them. Enlisted in Navy as "John Ferguson" and served in 1st War. Apparently the Army came looking for him at some stage but all must have been forgiven as he was in the Home Guard in the Second War.
So we know next to nothing about him and his ancestry, though suspect he may have been a foundling and Ferguson may not have been his given name.
But it would be interesting to know what unit he was in.
