Parachute Training in the Royal Anglians

Post by Scott_Allen »

Hey people,

been looking into the Royal Anglian regiment. Is it possible to go on parachute training courses in that regiment?

Also, what units in the army acctually are Air Bourne infantry as I really like the look of it.

P.S. Please dont say Paras :p

Air Bourne
1. Airborne.
what units in the army acctually are Air Bourne infantry
2. Para Reg are it. Sorry this isn't the answer you are looking for, but that is the answer to your question.

It's possible to get para trained for all sorts of jobs, mostly for attachment to Para Reg or 16 Air Assault. Whether it's likely or not is a different matter. Also, I think you would have about zero chance as a tom in the Royal Anglians. It's not necessary for that job.

I had the same thing when I started looking at the Forces, thinking that I might be able to join unit A but do training for units B, C and D as well. It doesn't work like that. The Army isn't there for you to collect badges, they are there to prepare you for your battlefield role, and you might have noticed they don't have much else spare to go around.

If you want to jump out of planes, do it in civvy street, or start training for P-Coy.

That's a classic, posting a question and then telling people not to give you the answer :-?

On a side note, while the Paras are the only Airborne Infantry there is also an Air Assault Battalion attatched to 16 Air Assault Brigade (IIRC it's the Royal Irish at the moment) however I beleive this is re-roled every so often so isn't performed by one single regiment.

I believe there is a Guards Regiment parachute battalion or company? Not entirely sure about this though.

Sigh.

Para Reg are the only airborne infantry. Like Alfa said, there are RI and Gurkha (presently) battalions which alternate role in 16 Air Assault, but that doesn't mean they perform in the airborne role. Also, you have no guarantee that they will still be in that role if you join, and have no guarantee that you will be posted to that battallion if they are.

There are various Guards, RHA, Sigs, and so on units attached to 16AA in the usual brigade support structure, and most of these units are para-trained. But they are not infantry, they are armored, artillery, signals and so on; once again you have no guarantee that you will be posted to them if you join their parent corps or regiment.

If you want airborne infantry, Para Reg are it. Why the problem?

Probably looking for an easy way in, that's more than likely the problem

You're missing the point, the battalions who are rolled into 16 Air Assault Brigade aren't Airborne, they don't do a jumps course or P Coy, they are trained to operate out of helicopters and like Sarastro say's there's no guarantee that you would get to perform that role as they change round every couple of years or so.

The only slight problem I can see with all this, is if the Para's are having problems getting their jumps in then why the hell should they another regiment in front of them.

This fine example of young English manhood has been all over MF&T.
First he wants to be a RM officer, then Army,RAF and TA.
When he gets an answer which he doesn't like he gets a sad on and blames everyone who has tried to help.

Waste of oxygen if you ask me.
Until he grows up a little.

Why not join whatever regiment you like and then take up skydiving as a hobby.

The thing is about Angle Irons, they're bent from end to end!

Had to give an Angle Iron a good slap on my APTI's crse in Bulford in '84. Horrid grungy little poisoned dwarf, he was. Never had a warm, fuzzy for them since.
