Marching question

Post by tonyh762 »

I have recently been told by a US National Guard (TA) LRS (long range surveillance) guy, that his platoon can march, with 45lb bergens (min weight) webbing/rifle, for 12 miles in 2 hrs and less.

Now considering for example the Paras do 10 miles in 1 hr 45 min, I find his claim to be very dubious.

You guys have done many many 10 milers between you all, what do you think of the truthfulness of his claim?

Is it possible?

It all comes with practise, we managed to cover a measured ten miles in an 1 hour 20 minutes mind you it was along a road and not across country.

12 miles in 2 hours with 45lbs sounds do-able. Im not sure about the US National Guard, if they are the equivilent to our TA then its definatly NOT possible seeing as the words "fat", "lazy" and "STAB" come to mind when i think of the TA. :D

Ahoy there,
The standard speed march (run and march) pace is 1 mile every 10 minutes.

Taken from the official RM site.
The Nine Mile Speed March
This test requires the Recruits to 'speed' march a total distance of 9 miles in 90 minutes (10 minutes per mile) carrying full fighting order and rifle (32lbs), Both Recruits and Officers must run as a squad or troop. Time: 90 minutes.
So, 1 mile every 10 minutes equals 6 miles an hour which equals 12 miles in two hours - but this does not include bergans.

Would you include 4 Para in that grouping?

No mate. 4 para are part of the reg, perhaps even more so than 1 para at this moment in time :P

We had some excellent 4 para lads help us out in afghan, they were as much a part of the battalion as any other man.

Well, after only 9 weekends and 1 week CIC (then P Coy the next week) they aren't gonna be anywhere near the regulars standard. They must be doing an OK job otherwise the regs wouldn't have them, surely?
