Okay soldiers, group huddle. :soldier_apc1: That's it, we're safe here. Listen up guys. We've got a situation. I need to ask you some questions.

I asked the army about the difference between Air Despatchers and the RAF Aircrew and I got told the basics and then some more.... :o

Ssgt said:
Some lad came into their office, asked about becoming an air despatcher and was then told by the army they'd let him join, etc etc despite him needing glasses for most things. Then told him the RAF "write off" anyone wanting these postions but had glasses: Pilot (obviously), all three aircrew positions (despite they're NOT flying  ) and Intelligence Officer- a ground job.

Spotting a little truck in a photo in easy so why deny someone Intell Officer?

Ssgt then told me the army welcome RAF rejects with open arms. :kissing:

What the RAF do is shocking! :-?

The title was because the RAF can be stuck up to average people. Do call in air if it means you die if you don't.

The comments you have made in this post are totally ridiculous, you need to grow up.
My 8 year old nephew would not come across as stupid as this!!!

Sorry but it's true. Slap on a pair of glasses, do bad in an eye test. You will be denied aircrew from the RAF but not A.D. from the army.

If you want a fight over this then forget it. Plus, make your profile a bit more respectable.

Far from it, I do not "want to fight"
"spotting a little truck in a photo is easy so why deny someone intell officer" explain that comment to me if you would?
Is this your idea of the job description for an intelligence officer?

"do call in air if it means you die if you don't"
I don't know if that's your effort at sarcasm or something you read from a computer game instruction book.

"the title was because the RAF can be stuck up to average people"
The title is stupidly worded and has no relevance to this comment.

My old man was RAF, most of the guys I met were not stuck up at all, of course there was one or two knobheads as in all walks of life, but nothing really out of the ordinary.
Although I have to admit they didn't really inspire me to go running down the afco, but that's just me personally.

To conclude, im not really arsed about the respectability of my profile, if you were hoping for a photo or a bit of chat up info, im not that way inclined!!

Don't call in air was said because some pilots are so big headed :-?
You said- ""spotting a little truck in a photo is easy so why deny someone intell officer" explain that comment to me if you would?" so here goes. They don't let you become an Intel Officer if you fail their requirements in the eye test. How tricky can a photo be? The hardest I've ever known was "Spot the ball" in The Mail.

You are a moron.

You have been fooled by some worthless propaganda by the army. I'm a close friend of several fast jet pilots (RAF) who wear glasses. Get a grip you fool. Your comments lack any coherency whatsoever. I'm only able to assume that you're a semi-literate bottom feeder.

I'm sorry if I upset you. Do you know that with the new gear fast jet pilots wear, you can't become a pilot if you wear glasses due to the hud screens and everything else hi tech.

Plus, I'm not a semi-literate bottom feeder, thanks anyway.

Dominic, judging by your further response I refer back to my post above.
Your comments were ridiculous and you do need to grow up!!

Okay, fine. Insult me but answer this question in return. I've answered it already but why can't people with glasses become pilots, aircrew or Intelligence Officers?

I assume there's a ready availability of people suitable for these jobs that have perfect eyesight, and therefore it would be nonsensical to dismiss them for people who require glasses.

My knowledge may be a bit sketchy, but as far as i'm aware HM Armed Forces does not accept 'rejects'.

Tam, maybe I should re-phrase that just to make it clearer. I didn't mean rejects in the definition of those not medically fit. I meant that people who couldn't become aircrew for the RAF could become air despatchers for the army. Hopefully that should clear any confusion in what I said. :)

Maybe a bit of explanation is called for.....

Aircrew in support helicopters and hercybirds get the aircraft where it needs to be to carry out its task. ADs make sure that the task is carried out. Clear so far?

My own experience of ADs is limited to support helicopters in N. Ireland - they ensure that the aircraft is within safety parameters, i.e. ground conditions, rotor tip strike risk, load trimming (balanced load), watching the 'blind spots' for takeoff/landing, general observation (navigation and ground attack) and just generally making sure the pilot has all the info he needs and that the a/c is not at risk. Also...making sure that 'visitors' take all their kit with them and don't damage the bloody thing.

by the way....the Wessex was the best, fast, reliable and quiet, Lynxes could be heard coming a mile off - literally.

have i missed anything?
